Kessingland Beach

Kessingland Beach is a broad, open Suffolk shingle-and-sand shore immediately south of Lowestoft, with a reputation as a straightforward East Coast beach venue rather than a heavily structured snagging mark. It can produce good mixed fishing when the sea is coloured and moving, especially through the cooler months.

• The beach generally shelves into a feature-light but changing seabed, so fish may be close in one tide and well beyond easy casting range on the next.
• It is a practical venue for anglers wanting room to spread out, although the most convenient access points can become busy in summer and during settled weekend weather.
• Productive sessions are often built around reading the tide, finding a cut or deeper gutter, and matching bait size to the target species rather than simply casting as far as possible.

The mark lies on the Suffolk coast at Kessingland, south of Lowestoft, and is reached through the village via the signed seafront and beach access routes. Several paths lead over or through the shingle bank, but conditions underfoot vary considerably.

• Use public parking and formal beach approaches where available; avoid blocking residential roads, access tracks, or emergency routes.
• The beach is generally easier to fish away from the busiest central bathing area, where there is usually more room to cast safely and less pedestrian traffic.

Whiting, dabs and other flatfish are regular expectations in the colder part of the year, while summer brings the prospect of bass and a wider mixed-bag fishery.

• Whiting are a principal autumn and winter target, particularly after dark and when there is some colour in the water.
• Dabs and flounder can feature over the cleaner sandier patches, often responding to smaller, well-presented baits.
• Codling may show in autumn and winter when a proper North Sea swell has stirred the beach, though catches are naturally variable and should not be assumed.
• Bass are possible in the warmer months, especially around a moving tide, coloured water, and any close-in trough or disturbance.
• Other occasional visitors can include eel, dogfish, rays, smooth-hound and mackerel, depending on the season and local conditions; treat these as opportunities rather than guaranteed targets.

Simple, robust beach tactics work well here, with rigs chosen for the amount of tide and the size of bait being used. Start by covering different ranges, because a short cast into a nearshore gutter can outfish a full-power cast over the top of feeding fish.

• For whiting, dabs and general mixed fishing, use a two-hook clipped or flapper-style rig with modest bait sizes; a grip lead is useful when the tide is running.
• For codling, bass or larger baits, a single-hook pulley or clipped-down rig presents worm, crab, squid or fish baits cleanly and reduces the risk of bait spinning in flight.
• Lugworm, ragworm, squid, mackerel strip, bluey and peeler crab are all worthwhile choices, but fresh local worm bait is often the sensible starting point for a beach session.
• Fish one rod close and one farther out when practical, then move both into the most productive zone once bites reveal where fish are feeding.
• After dark, use reliable rod-rests, a headtorch with a red setting if possible, and clearly visible reflective tips or bite indication; keep tackle well above the expected high-water line.

Kessingland usually fishes best when there is enough movement and colour to bring food close to shore, rather than during long periods of clear, flat, bright weather. The exact productive state varies with the season, so a short reconnaissance at low water can be very useful.

• A building or easing sea after onshore or north-easterly weather can improve the prospects for codling, whiting and bass, but also makes casting and safe positioning more difficult.
• The first part of the flood, high water, and the early ebb are commonly worth prioritising, especially when a deeper run or gully is present close in.
• Low water can expose useful clues such as gutters, firmer sand, shell beds, coloured-water lines and changes in shingle depth; these features can shift after rough weather.
• In clear, calm conditions, dawn, dusk and darkness are often more productive than the middle of a bright day.
• Strong easterly seas can make this exposed coast uncomfortable or unsafe; do not stand close to the waterline merely to gain a few extra metres of casting distance.

This is an exposed North Sea beach, and the main hazards are surf, rapidly changing weather, loose shingle and the reduced escape space around high water. It is a better mark for anglers able to manage uneven ground and carry equipment safely.

• Never turn your back on the sea: sets of larger waves can arrive after apparently manageable conditions.
• Keep a generous margin above the wash, particularly in darkness, during strong winds, or when fishing around high tide.
• Wear warm, waterproof layers and sturdy footwear with good grip; shingle becomes unstable and tiring, especially when wet.
• Tell someone where you are going, carry a charged phone, and avoid fishing alone in rough conditions or at isolated stretches after dark.
• The shingle bank, soft ground and variable beach approaches may make wheelchair access and heavy-trolley access difficult; check the chosen access point in advance rather than assuming a level route.

Kessingland village has the practical advantages of nearby shops, food outlets and public amenities, although availability and opening hours are seasonal and can change. Treat the beach itself as a largely self-sufficient fishing venue.

• Bring drinking water, spare bait, lighting, a first-aid kit and a means of taking all litter home, particularly for evening sessions.
• Public parking and toilet provision may be available around the seafront, but anglers should check current local information before travelling and should not rely on facilities being open late.
• There are no fixed fishing platforms or sheltered angling pegs; a solid tripod and properly secured tackle are useful on the shingle.
• Respect nearby homes, holiday accommodation and other beach users by keeping noise and vehicle activity to a minimum at night.

The most useful local skill at Kessingland is not blindly chasing distance but finding where the beach is holding water and food on that particular tide. Arrive early enough to walk the intended area and look for a seam, gulley or change in bottom before setting up.

• If the tide is strong, use only enough lead and rig length to hold bottom and fish effectively; oversized terminal tackle can reduce bite detection on smaller species.
• Fish baits securely with bait elastic when the sea is lively, as worm and soft crab baits can be stripped quickly by crabs and small fish.
• In winter, a late-afternoon start that carries into darkness is often a sensible plan for whiting and any chance of codling.
• In summer, travel light and concentrate effort around dawn, dusk, or a coloured daytime tide for bass rather than expecting constant daytime action.
• Leave no line, hooks or bait packaging behind, and be particularly careful of wildlife, dog walkers and children using the same open beach.

There is no clear, blanket indication that recreational shore fishing is prohibited along Kessingland Beach, but access and fishing can be restricted locally by temporary works, safety notices, seasonal beach management or signed exclusion areas. The absence of a general ban does not override any notice displayed at the access point or on the beach.

• Check current council signage at the specific entrance you use, especially near the main bathing beach, car parks, sea-defence works and any cordoned areas.
• Follow national rules for retained sea fish, including any current bass restrictions, and observe applicable minimum conservation reference sizes and catch limits.
