Kessingland Sluice

Kessingland Sluice is best treated as a mobile, tide-led Suffolk beach mark rather than a fixed platform fishery. The attraction is the mixing water around the drainage outfall, which can concentrate food and draw fish along an otherwise open stretch of shingle and sand.

• Fish the beach well clear of the sluice structure and discharge, moving along the shore if weed, coloured water or beach contours make one side unproductive.
• It is principally a bait-fishing venue, with a long cast occasionally useful but not invariably essential when fish are feeding close in.
• The character of the mark changes after rough weather and beach movement; a productive gully or shallow shelf can disappear in a single season.

The mark is on the Kessingland coast, south of Lowestoft, where a land-drainage outlet meets the sea. Access is normally approached from the village and public beach access points rather than by trying to use the sluice works themselves.

• Use established public paths, beach entrances and parking areas, then walk the beach to assess the outfall and safe fishing space.
• Do not assume that the bank, track, gates, pump/sluice structures or land immediately behind the beach are public access; they may be operational land or privately controlled.
• The beach is exposed and can involve a walk over soft shingle, particularly if parking away from the nearest access point.
• Coastal erosion and flood-defence works can alter routes, parking and the appearance of the outlet, so check conditions on arrival.

It can produce the usual East Anglian open-beach species, with the better prospects changing markedly with season, sea state and the amount of freshwater flowing. The outlet can be particularly worth a look when it has created a coloured-water edge or a defined food trail.

• Autumn and winter: whiting, codling when fish are present along the coast, dab, flounder, dogfish and occasional bigger shore species.
• Spring and summer: bass, flounder, eel, sole in suitable settled conditions, and occasional smoothhound or ray possibilities when those species are running locally.
• All year: smaller flatfish, pouting and other mixed beach fish can provide sport, especially on lighter baits.
• Bass and flounder may use the brackish edge, but avoid treating the freshwater channel itself as a public sea-fishing swim.

A two-rod approach works well here: one rod for a larger, more selective bait and one for a smaller, more mobile presentation. Let the actual beach shape dictate range rather than casting blindly as far as possible.

• For whiting, codling and dogfish, use clipped or otherwise streamlined bait rigs with lugworm, ragworm, squid, peeler crab or fish strip as appropriate; a pennel arrangement is useful for larger baits.
• For dab, flounder and other flatfish, a two-hook flapper or light pulley rig carrying worm, small crab baits or worm-and-squid cocktails is effective; coloured attractors can help in murky water.
• For bass, fish fresh peeler crab, ragworm, lugworm or a modest fish bait in the first gully, along the colour line, or near—but never within—the discharge flow.
• Use grip leads when the surf is pushing hard, but reduce lead size and tackle weight in calm conditions so baits can move naturally.
• A headtorch, spare grip leads and a long-handled net are sensible additions; inspect every leader for abrasion from shingle and debris.

A building flood and the period around high water are often the most straightforward times to fish the beach, because water reaches the nearer gullies and fish can travel close along the shoreline. The sluice plume can add a short-lived opportunity, but it should not override safe tide and sea conditions.

• Start with roughly the last two to three hours of the flood and fish into high water where access allows; the first part of the ebb can also fish if the beach remains safe.
• The strongest flow from the outlet can create turbulent water, debris and undercut ground; fish away from its direct path rather than trying to place a bait in it.
• Moderate coloured water after a manageable onshore blow can improve worm and crab-bait fishing, while prolonged heavy surf may make the mark unpleasant or unsafe.
• Calm, clearer spells can favour flatfish and sole-style tactics, particularly after dark in the warmer months.
• Expect weed after easterly or north-easterly weather and be prepared to move, shorten casts or change venue if it makes lines unfishable.

This is an exposed shoreline with changing shingle, surf and a working drainage outlet, so it is not a mark for casual access close to the waterline. Conditions can become hazardous quickly on a rising tide or in rough weather.

• Never stand on, climb over or fish from sluice gates, outfall walls, sea-defence works, groynes or other structures unless there is clear public permission and they are demonstrably safe.
• Keep children, dogs and loose tackle away from the outlet; rapid flow, slippery surfaces and concealed scour are real hazards.
• Check tide times before travelling, keep an escape route behind you, and do not allow a rising tide to cut off the beach access route.
• Shingle is tiring and uneven underfoot. The route is generally unsuitable for wheelchairs and can be difficult for anglers with limited mobility, especially after rain or rough seas.
• Avoid fishing alone in heavy surf or darkness, tell someone your plan, and use a flotation aid where conditions warrant it.

Kessingland village provides the practical support expected of a coastal village, while the fishing itself is on an open beach with little shelter. Treat facilities as separate from the mark and plan to be self-sufficient on the shore.

• Shops, food options and public conveniences may be available in the village, but opening hours and seasonal availability should be checked before a late or winter session.
• Use only properly designated parking and avoid blocking residential streets, access tracks, gates or emergency routes.
• There may be a walk from parking to the beach, so a trolley can be useful, although loose shingle can make a heavily loaded trolley awkward.
• Take all line, bait packets, hooks and discarded tackle home; beach litter is both hazardous and highly visible.

The best local lesson is to arrive early enough to read the water rather than committing to the first obvious spot beside the outlet. A small move along the beach often makes more difference than changing to a more elaborate rig.

• Look for a darker gully, a smoother patch behind a shingle bar, a seam of coloured water, or a line where the discharge meets cleaner sea water.
• Fish fresh, well-presented worm and crab baits before relying on large frozen cocktails; Suffolk beach fish can be selective in clear water.
• In a crosswind, cast slightly upwind and use a grip lead only heavy enough to hold, as excessive weight can bury a bait in soft ground.
• Keep baits and tackle above the strand line, particularly near the outfall, because floating weed and litter can arrive suddenly.
• If the water is heavily fouled, the surf is unsafe, or the outlet is in strong flow, choose a more sheltered public beach mark instead of forcing the session.

There is no basis here to state that sea fishing at the beach is universally prohibited, but access immediately around a sluice can be controlled and operational restrictions may apply. Observe every sign, barrier and instruction on site; if signage says no fishing or no access, move away and do not assume the beach entitlement extends to the structure.

• Do not enter restricted drainage, flood-defence or private land, interfere with gates or equipment, or obstruct staff and maintenance access.
• Sea angling rules on retained species, including any current bass measures, minimum landing sizes, closed periods and bag limits, can change; check the latest official UK and regional fisheries guidance before retaining fish.
• If fishing on the freshwater or brackish landward side of the sluice, obtain the landowner or fishery permission and ensure you hold any required Environment Agency rod licence; sea-fishing access does not grant those rights.
• Follow local parking restrictions, beach byelaws and any temporary notices relating to coastal works, flood risk, pollution incidents or protected wildlife.
• Do not climb on or enter the sluice and pumping structures.
• Sections of the shingle are fenced in spring and summer for nesting birds; keep outside the fencing.
