Kyson Point is a quiet tidal-estuary mark on the River Deben, in the Woodbridge/Kyson area of Suffolk. It is best approached as light estuary fishing rather than open-coast sea angling, with the main appeal being peaceful sessions for flounder, school bass and other species moving with the tide.

• Expect a sheltered, muddy-and-shingly river environment rather than a surf beach or deep-water pier.
• It can produce enjoyable fishing when fish are running through the estuary, but it is generally a subtle mark where tide, bait and a quiet approach matter more than maximum casting distance.

Kyson Point lies on the tidal River Deben near Woodbridge, with access generally associated with the riverside public-footpath network and nearby lanes/settlement. Exact fishable spots, parking arrangements and access conditions can change, and the foreshore or bank itself may not be public even where a footpath is.

• Travel light: the best-looking bank edges can involve uneven ground, mud, reed margins and limited room for a rod rest.
• Use only legitimate public access points and do not cross private gardens, fields, boatyard land, fenced areas or moorings to reach the water.

• Migratory fish may be present in the river system; treat any salmonid catch with particular care and check current local rules before targeting or retaining it.

Simple, sensitive estuary tactics are more productive here than heavy beachcasting gear. Fish as lightly as wind, tide and boat traffic allow, keeping the bait close to the productive channel edge or slope rather than automatically casting as far as possible.

• For flounder, use a light ledger or running leger with a small hook and enough lead to hold without dragging through the mud; a two-hook flapper can work where tangles and weed are not a problem.
• Worm baits should be fresh, neat and securely bound with bait elastic if crabs or small fish are stripping them quickly.
• A 6–9 ft light lure rod, small metals, soft plastics or shallow plugs can be useful for mobile bass fishing, but avoid casting across boating channels or around moored vessels.
• For mullet, use a float or freelined presentation with fine line, small hooks and minimal disturbance; bread-based approaches can work but should be used sparingly and without leaving litter or excess feed.

The mark is governed by the River Deben’s tidal flow, not simply by the published coastal high-water time. A rising tide often brings the most useful water over shallow margins, while the first part of the ebb can concentrate fish along deeper edges; the precise window depends on the individual swim.

• Fish a reconnaissance visit in daylight and note where the channel, firm ground, boat moorings and safe exits are at different tide heights.
• Moderate tides are often easier to fish than very large springs, when current, floating debris and exposed mud can make presentation and access difficult.
• A clean, settled spell can favour mullet and lure fishing, while a little colour and movement may improve flounder and bait fishing.
• Strong easterly winds can make exposed stretches uncomfortable despite the estuary’s shelter, while rain can alter freshwater influence and water clarity.
• Do not allow a rising tide to cut off your return route; estuary creeks, soft mud and low banks can look benign at low water and become hazardous quickly.

Kyson Point is not an easy-access, paved promenade mark: expect natural tidal banks, slippery surfaces and variable footing. The principal hazards are soft mud, a rapidly changing waterline, boating activity and reduced visibility after dark.

• Wear boots with good grip and take a wading staff if exploring unfamiliar soft ground; do not attempt to cross mudflats or creeks without sound local knowledge.
• Fish with a companion where possible, tell someone your plan, and carry a charged phone and headtorch for evening sessions.
• Keep well clear of moored boats, private pontoons, sailing activity and navigation routes; never cast where a boat may pass over the line.
• Be considerate around dog walkers, cyclists and other users of the riverside path, especially when casting or carrying rods in low light.
• Access may be difficult for anglers with limited mobility because of uneven banks, mud and potentially long walks from lawful parking; check the route in person before planning an assisted or accessible session.
• Leave immediately if weather, tide or ground conditions make the exit uncertain.
• The Deben mud here is deep and dangerous; fish from the bank around high water and never venture onto the flats.

Facilities at the point itself should be assumed to be minimal or absent. Woodbridge provides the nearest wider range of shops, food, public amenities and angling-related supplies, subject to individual opening times.

• Take all bait, drinking water, toilet provisions, litter bags and basic first-aid items with you.
• Do not rely on a toilet, shelter, lighting, tackle shop, bin or formal fishing platform being available at the bank.
• Park only where it is clearly permitted and without narrowing lanes, blocking drives or interfering with local traffic and agricultural access.
• Keep vehicle valuables out of sight and avoid leaving bait, packaging or wet gear at access points.
• A compact chair, bankstick setup and small tackle bag are more practical than a large beach trolley on narrow or uneven paths.

Success at Kyson Point usually comes from observation and restraint. Spend time watching the water before committing to a spot: baitfish movement, mullet rolls, current seams, deeper coloured water and areas avoided by boats can reveal much more than a long blind cast.

• Start with a short session around a chosen tide phase and keep notes on water level, bait, wind and catches; estuary marks reward local pattern-building.
• Fish close in first, especially on a flooding tide, as flounder and bass may patrol surprisingly tight to the edge.
• Keep rigs simple and use only as much lead as the flow requires; over-weighted rigs can bury in soft substrate.
• Use a quiet approach, particularly in clear water or when targeting mullet: avoid stamping on boards, slamming car doors and repeatedly casting over visible fish.
• Respect nearby residents, sailing clubs and boat users by keeping noise, lighting and bait preparation discreet.
• Take every scrap of line, bait wrapper and discarded tackle home; these sheltered estuary margins are important habitat as well as fishing ground.

Fishing rights on tidal rivers can be complex, and the absence of a prohibition sign should not be treated as proof that fishing is permitted. Before fishing, establish that the precise bank or foreshore is public or that you have the relevant landowner, club or fishery permission.
