Pin Mill

Pin Mill is a picturesque, sheltered River Orwell estuary mark rather than an open-coast beach, with fishing shaped strongly by tide, boat traffic and extensive mudflats. It can produce enjoyable light-tackle fishing, particularly for flounder and other estuarine species, but it is not a venue for casting huge distances or expecting exposed-coast conditions.

Pin Mill lies on the south bank of the River Orwell in Suffolk, between Ipswich and the river mouth, in a landscape of saltings, mud, moorings and wooded estuary shore. Access is via narrow rural lanes, and the waterfront can become busy with walkers, boat users and visitors.

• The public hard and foreshore area are the obvious starting points, but space is limited and many nearby structures, moorings and banks are private or associated with boats.

• Ragworm, lugworm, maddies, peeled prawn, small strips of squid and crab-based baits can all be worth trying; small, fresh baits often outfish oversized cocktails in the estuary.
• A 1.5–2.5 lb test-curve rod, light beachcaster or robust spinning rod, matched with modest terminal tackle, is usually ample for the confined water.

• Mid-tide through to high water is often the most practical period from the waterfront, because more of the foreshore is covered and fish can move closer in.

• Slack water can be quiet, while the strongest flow may require a little more lead and can make presentation difficult.
• A modest coloured estuary after settled weather or gentle freshwater can suit flounder; extreme freshwater after heavy rain can push saltwater species farther downriver.
• Wind can make the exposed reaches uncomfortable despite the generally sheltered setting. Wind against tide can create short, awkward chop and make small-boat traffic more hazardous.
• Consult a current local tide table and weather forecast before travelling; do not rely on a generic coastal tide time for planning a safe return across the foreshore.

The principal hazards at Pin Mill are soft mud, a rising tide, slippery hard surfaces and active river traffic—not surf or large waves. The picturesque foreshore can look firm but may be dangerously difficult to cross once wet or soft.

• Do not walk onto mudflats unless you know the ground well; estuarine mud can trap boots and may leave you unable to retreat before the tide returns.
• Fish from firm ground where possible, keep a clear route back to the road or hard, and arrive early enough to assess the waterline in daylight.
• Wear footwear with good grip, carry a headtorch after dusk and keep gear compact so that you can move quickly if conditions change.
• Never cast across mooring trots, close to vessels, or into the path of moving boats. Retrieve promptly if a craft is approaching.

A quiet, thoughtful approach usually pays better at Pin Mill than trying to dominate the waterfront with large tackle and long casts. Spend time watching the tide line, current seams and boat-free lanes before setting up.

• Fish an initial visit around a rising daytime tide so you can identify firm standing areas, deeper water and safe exit routes.
• Keep rods low and casts controlled; this is a shared waterfront, and courtesy to walkers, residents and boat owners is essential.
• A small bait selection is better than carrying a huge amount: worm and peeled prawn cover many of the likely estuary opportunities.
• If flounder are the aim, move a bait periodically or recast neatly after a reasonable soak rather than leaving it buried in silt for hours.
• Polarised glasses can help reveal channels and fish in calm, clear conditions, but never mistake visible mudbanks for safe walking ground.
• Avoid shining lights into homes, boats or across the river at night, and keep noise to a minimum in this residential and heritage-sensitive setting.

There is no clear basis to describe all fishing at Pin Mill as officially prohibited, but access and fishing rights are not identical along every part of this shore. Anglers must verify the status of the exact place they intend to fish and comply with current national and local rules.

• Do not enter private land, private jetties, moored boats, boatyards or signed restricted areas without the owner's express permission.
• Observe all posted instructions at the hard, waterfront and any land managed for navigation, conservation or boat operations; temporary restrictions can apply.
