Erwarton Bay

Erwarton Bay is a quiet, tidal estuary mark on the Suffolk side of the River Stour, rather than an open North Sea beach. It can produce worthwhile fishing for anglers prepared to work around a short tidal window, soft ground and potentially limited shore access.

• The attraction is the mix of mudflats, creeks and deeper tidal channels, which hold estuary species and occasional better fish moving through the Stour.
• It is generally a more subtle, location-dependent venue than a cast-and-wait surf beach; finding water depth and a clean patch of ground matters greatly.
• Expect a peaceful rural setting, but do not mistake that for unrestricted public access to every section of foreshore.

The bay lies by the village of Erwarton on the north bank of the Stour estuary, opposite the Harwich area. Access is commonly associated with local lanes and public footpaths, but the shoreline, fields and approach tracks can be private or have no public parking.

• Use only signed public footpaths, permissive routes where they are clearly open, or land where you have the owner's permission.
• Do not drive down farm tracks, block gateways, park on verges without care, or assume that a path gives a right to cross the adjoining foreshore.
• The most fishable water is usually reached from firm ground near a channel edge, not by attempting to walk far out across the exposed bay.
• Arrive in daylight on a first visit so that you can identify safe exits, drainage creeks and the state of the ground before the tide rises.

Erwarton Bay is primarily an estuary mixed-species venue. Catches vary considerably with season, salinity, tide and the exact channel fished.

• Flounder are a realistic target, particularly over the cooler months and wherever a channel runs close to the bank.
• Bass may appear in the warmer part of the year, especially around a flooding tide when baitfish, prawns and crabs are pushed along the margins.
• Eels, school bass, small whiting and occasional codling can feature, with the latter two more likely in colder conditions and when the estuary has sufficient coloured water.
• Mullet may be seen in settled, warmer weather, although they are often cautious and demand a quieter, more specialised approach.
• Small rays or other visitors are possible in the broader Stour system, but they should be treated as a bonus rather than a dependable expectation from every bay position.

Fishing needs to be matched to the estuary's modest casting distances, strong tidal movement and snaggy or silty bottom. A light but robust approach is usually more useful than extreme-distance beach gear.

• A two- or three-hook clipped flapper, or a simple running leger, covers flounder, whiting and general estuary fishing; use enough lead to hold without dragging continually.
• Fish baits such as ragworm, lugworm, peeler crab, squid and small strips of mackerel can all work, with worm and crab especially useful for flounder and bass.
• Keep hook sizes and bait presentation sensible: smaller, neat worm baits often outfish oversized offerings when the water is clear or fish are tentative.
• A bass rig with a single larger bait, fished close to a channel margin on the flood, is often more purposeful than casting blindly across the mud.
• Carry spare leads and rigs, as old debris, shell and uneven channel edges can claim tackle.

The bay is strongly tide-led: at low water much of the visible ground is mudflat, while the incoming tide concentrates fish into gutters and channels. The best fishing is often limited to the latter part of the flood and the first part of the ebb, subject to a safe place to stand.

• Study the tide before travelling and allow enough time to leave well before your route is cut off by the flood.
• Moderate to larger tides can put more water within reach, but stronger flows can make light rigs difficult to hold and increase the risk around creeks.
• Coloured water after wind or rain can improve confidence for bass, whiting and codling, whereas bright, calm, clear conditions may favour lighter tackle and more discreet tactics.
• Avoid treating low-water mud as fishable walking ground; the productive channel may be inaccessible and the flats can be hazardous.
• Wind direction affects comfort more than surf formation here, but exposed banks can become unpleasant quickly in a strong onshore or cross-estuary wind.

The principal hazards at Erwarton Bay are deep soft mud, hidden tidal creeks and a rapid loss of safe ground on the flood. It is not a mark suited to anglers with limited mobility, nor to anyone unfamiliar with estuary mudflat conditions.

• Never cross mudflats or attempt to wade to reach a distant channel; mud can trap boots and channels may be deeper than they appear.
• Fish with a companion where possible, tell someone your plans, carry a fully charged phone and keep a clear, dry route back to the vehicle or public path.
• Wear suitable boots and warm, waterproof clothing; smooth wet clay, seaweed and uneven bank edges are common slip hazards.
• Do not fish beneath eroding banks or close to unstable edges, and be especially cautious after rain when paths and access slopes may be slick.
• There may be no practical wheelchair access, level platform or close parking at the fishing area.
• Extensive soft mud is exposed at low water; fish the flood and high water from the bank.

Erwarton Bay is a rural mark with little or no angler infrastructure at the shore itself. Treat it as self-sufficient fishing and prepare before leaving the main roads.

• Do not expect toilets, lighting, tackle supplies, freshwater taps, bins or sheltered fishing platforms at the bay.
• Bring drinking water, food, a headtorch for any late session, a first-aid kit and a means of taking all litter and discarded line home.
• Fuel, food and other services are better sought in the surrounding larger villages or towns before heading to the mark.
• Keep parking low-impact and lawful; rural access depends on anglers avoiding obstruction and leaving no trace.

A short reconnaissance visit around low water, from safe public ground only, can be extremely valuable at this type of estuary venue. It helps reveal where the firmer bank ends, where creeks lie and whether a fishable channel is actually within casting range.

• Look for a defined run of deeper, darker water, bends in a creek, shellier patches and places where the flood first reaches the bank.
• Fish moving water rather than waiting until the bay is fully flooded and featureless; the final flood can be particularly useful if a channel is close.
• Travel light enough to retreat easily, but use a rod rest or tripod securely placed well back from any soft edge.
• Fresh worm and crab baits are worth the effort, and modest casts to a channel lip can be more productive than maximum-distance casting.
• Keep noise and lights to a minimum around homes, livestock and wildlife, especially for dawn, dusk and night sessions.

There is no safe basis for assuming that all of Erwarton Bay is open to public angling merely because it is coastal foreshore. Access rights, landowner conditions, conservation controls and any local notices must be checked at the precise entry point before fishing.

• Obey all signs, gates, seasonal notices and instructions from landowners or site managers; if access is not clearly public, seek permission rather than proceeding.
• Check current national and local rules for minimum sizes, retained species, closed seasons where applicable and any restrictions affecting bass or other regulated fish; these rules can change.
• Return protected, undersized or unwanted fish carefully, and avoid unnecessary handling of rays, mullet and bass.
• Do not disturb nesting birds, roosting birds, livestock or saltmarsh habitat, and keep dogs under proper control where permitted.
• If the intended spot falls within a designated conservation area or has a fishery/byelaw notice, obtain the current advice from the relevant official authority or land manager before your trip.
• Access is on foot by the coast path only; there is no shore parking and the farmland behind is private.
