Shotley Point

Shotley Point is the exposed southern tip of the Shotley peninsula, where the River Orwell meets the River Stour opposite the Harwich/Felixstowe area. It is a tidal estuary mark rather than a simple beach venue, valued for moving-water fishing but demanding respect for currents, shipping and access boundaries.

• Expect a mix of estuary and inshore species rather than a guaranteed "big-fish" venue.
• It can produce best when bait is being carried naturally along a defined tide line, rather than when lines are dragged through excessive flow.
• The exact fishable peg matters: conditions can be very different on the Orwell-facing and Stour-facing sides of the point.

The mark is at Shotley Gate, near Shotley Marina, on the south-eastern end of the Shotley peninsula in Suffolk. Approach only by publicly available roads, public rights of way and foreshore where access is lawful; waterfront land, marina property and former/adjacent private sites must not be treated as open fishing ground.

• The most practical approach is usually from the Shotley Gate/Shotley Marina area, followed by a walk to a lawful section of shoreline or sea-wall path.
• Check gates, notices and the status of any path before carrying a lot of tackle down; access arrangements and land management can change.
• Do not climb fences, cross marina compounds, fish from private jetties or use moorings and pontoons without the operator's explicit permission.
• The ground is commonly a combination of shingle, firm-to-soft mud, saltmarsh edge and sloping bank, rather than a level promenade platform.

Shotley Point offers the typical mixed fishing of the lower Orwell and Stour, with catches changing markedly by season, salinity, water temperature and tide. Flatfish and small estuary species are realistic targets, while better bass, rays and winter fish are possible at the right time.

• Flounder are a principal estuary target, especially through the cooler months and on flooding water over suitable muddy ground.
• Dab, plaice, sole and eel may occur, although their presence is variable and should not be assumed on every visit.
• School bass can show in warmer water, particularly where baitfish and crabs are present; larger fish are possible but are far from routine.
• Whiting and occasional codling have historically featured in autumn and winter catches, with thornback ray also a potential warm-season or autumn visitor.
• Mullet, herring, sprat and other baitfish may appear seasonally, while small pout and similar species are possible around harder ground and structures.

A simple, robust bait-fishing approach is generally more useful here than trying to cast extreme distances. Tackle must hold bottom safely without making the rig so heavy that bites are masked or a snagged lead becomes difficult to recover.

• Use a beachcaster or sturdy bass rod with a fixed-spool or multiplier reel, plus a shockleader appropriate to the casting weight.
• Start with a grip lead sized for the tide; increase only enough to hold bottom, as the flow at the point can be substantially stronger than farther inside either estuary.
• A two-hook flapper, clipped-down rig or short pulley rig covers most bait fishing. Keep hook snoods reasonably short in fast water to reduce tangles.
• Lugworm, ragworm, peeler crab, squid, mackerel strip and cocktail baits are all useful choices, matched to the target species and season.
• For flounder, a light flowing or two-hook rig with worm bait is effective; small attractors can help in coloured water but should not be overdone.
• For bass or ray, fish a larger, well-presented bait on a stronger single-hook rig and avoid leaving unattended rods in the tidal flow.

Tide is the key factor at Shotley Point: the meeting of two estuaries can create a pronounced run, changing direction, colour and depth quickly. A fishable session is usually one that coincides with manageable flow and a safe place to stand, not simply the highest tide on a chart.

• Flooding water often brings feeding fish up the estuary and is a sensible starting point for flounder, bass and mixed-species fishing.
• Around slack water can make tackle presentation easier, particularly where the main run prevents a lead from holding bottom.
• Ebb tides can fish well, but current may become powerful and carry weed, debris or a bow in the line; move or stop if control is lost.
• The mark can be uncomfortable in an onshore or cross-estuary wind, and exposed conditions amplify chop and vessel wash.
• Check a current local tide forecast rather than relying on an assumed time difference from another port, and allow for weather-driven changes in water level.

This is not a casual wading mark. Fast tidal water, soft estuarine mud, steep or uneven banks and large commercial and leisure vessels are the principal hazards.

• Never wade out toward channels or mudflats: soft mud can trap legs, the tide can cut off a return route, and depth may change abruptly.
• Keep well back from eroded edges and below-bank wash; wakes from passing vessels can arrive quickly and are larger than they first appear.
• Do not cast across, into or near a navigable channel, moored craft, harbour works or moving vessels. Recover tackle promptly if a vessel approaches.
• Wear grippy footwear, carry a headtorch after dark, and take a phone in a waterproof case. A buoyancy aid is sensible when fishing close to deep tidal water.
• Access is generally unsuitable for wheelchairs and difficult for anglers with limited mobility because surfaces can be uneven, muddy and sloping.
• Fish with a companion where possible, especially at night, and leave before a rising tide removes your safe route off the shore.

Shotley Gate and the marina area provide the nearest services, but anglers should regard them as local amenities rather than facilities supplied for the fishing mark. Availability, opening times and public access can vary.

• Parking may be available locally, but observe signed restrictions, marina terms and residents' access at all times.
• Food, drink and marina-related services may be available nearby; do not assume that toilets, tackle supplies or overnight parking are open to non-customers.
• Bring drinking water, bait, a first-aid kit, litter bags and all essentials, particularly for evening sessions.
• Keep access roads, slipways, gates and launch areas clear for marina users and emergency vehicles.

Treat Shotley Point as several small marks rather than one uniform swim. A short move to fish the more sheltered side, cleaner water or a better-defined tide line can be more productive than simply casting farther.

• Visit in daylight first to identify safe standing areas, private boundaries, snaggy patches and the route back at high water.
• Fish a modest cast initially; in estuary water, fish often patrol close to the bank or along the edge of a channel.
• Watch the line angle closely. If the tide repeatedly sweeps the rig into other users' water or toward a channel, reduce distance, change lead, move, or wait for slower water.
• Travel light enough to move safely, but take spare leads and rigs because debris and rough patches can claim terminal tackle.
• Avoid leaving bait, line or fish remains on the shore. The area is used by walkers, dog walkers, boat users and wildlife.

There is no clear basis to describe all of Shotley Point as a blanket no-fishing mark, but lawful access is highly location-specific and restrictions can apply to marina land, harbour infrastructure, private foreshore and protected areas. Check current official notices on arrival and follow any instruction from the landowner, marina operator, harbour authority or authorised officer.

• Sea anglers in England do not normally need a rod licence for ordinary sea fishing, but this does not grant a right to cross private land or fish from private structures.
• Observe current national rules for bass and any other regulated species, including retained-fish limits, minimum sizes, seasonal restrictions and permitted methods; these rules can change, so consult official fisheries guidance before fishing.
• Check current Harwich Haven/port navigation information and local harbour or marina rules, particularly around navigation channels, structures, slipways and moorings.
• Release undersize, protected or unwanted fish carefully, and do not remove shellfish or bait from areas where local controls, signs or conservation restrictions apply.
• If signage is absent but access appears to be within a marina, a working waterfront, private land or a sensitive habitat, ask permission or choose another lawful peg rather than assuming fishing is permitted.
• The marina pontoons, lock and basin are private; fish from the public sea-wall path around the point only.
