Southwold Harbour South Wall is a tidal, open-coast mark at the southern side of the River Blyth entrance, offering a mixture of harbour-mouth and beach fishing. It can produce worthwhile fish, particularly when there is coloured water or a bit of sea running, but it is not a place for treating the tide or the structure lightly.

• Expect a compact Suffolk shingle-and-sand venue rather than a deep-water pier fishery.
• The attraction is the meeting of tidal harbour flow, the surf line and any food washed around the entrance.
• It is generally most useful for mobile anglers prepared to adjust position, casting angle and bait to the tide and weather.

The mark is reached from the Southwold Harbour area on the south side of the river entrance, with the fishing area lying around the southern wall and adjacent beach. Access arrangements can change with coastal works, erosion protection and local management, so assess the route on arrival rather than assuming every section is open.

• Use the public harbour-side approaches and designated parking areas; do not drive onto the beach, shingle or private land.
• Some sections involve uneven shingle, sloping concrete, timberwork, rocks or soft sand, and are not suitable for a laden trolley.
• The most practical fishing may be from the beach alongside the wall rather than from the highest or narrowest parts of the structure.

• There is no reason to expect lighting, shelter, tackle wash-down or a dedicated fishing platform at the mark.
• Take all discarded line, bait packaging and litter home, as wildlife and harbour users are particularly vulnerable to lost tackle.

A quiet, observant approach generally catches more here than simply casting over the horizon. Spend the first few minutes watching the water for current seams, coloured patches, gull activity and the position of other harbour users.

• Fish two distances if conditions allow: one bait in or just beyond the surf and one farther out over the cleaner-looking ground.
• Move if weed, crabs or cross-tide make presentation impossible; repeated retrieval of fouled rigs is rarely productive.
