Hayburn Wyke

Hayburn Wyke is a dramatic, rough-ground North Yorkshire rock mark beneath a steep wooded ravine, north of Scarborough. It can produce excellent fishing in the right sea, but it is a serious, weather-dependent venue rather than an easy casual beach session.

• Expect uneven boulders, kelp beds, gullies and broken rock rather than a level casting platform.
• It is best regarded as a mobile, daylight-first mark: spend time finding safe water and fishable channels before committing to a long session.
• The cove and adjacent rock edges can hold fish, but conditions and access matter more here than chasing a particular “spot”.
• It suits anglers comfortable with North Yorkshire’s physical rock marks and with carrying all equipment in and out unaided.

Hayburn Wyke lies on the North Yorkshire coast near Cloughton, reached on foot via the coastal path and the steep wooded wyke leading down towards the shore. The final approach and the shore itself can be slippery, muddy and demanding, especially after rain.

• Parking is normally sought on the inland/coastal-road side of the site, followed by a walk; use only legitimate parking and do not obstruct lanes, gateways or emergency access.
• The descent through the ravine is steep in places, with natural, uneven surfaces and steps; it can be substantially worse after wet weather.
• At the bottom, access to useful fishing positions requires crossing rocks and boulders. Do not assume that a route used at low water will remain safe as the tide rises.
• Travel light, keep both hands free where possible, and allow plenty of daylight for the return walk.
• The shore is not suitable for vehicle access, trolleys, large amounts of tackle, or anglers who are not steady on rough ground.

Hayburn Wyke is principally a mixed rough-ground mark, with species changing markedly between calm summer conditions and colder, coloured-water periods. Codling are the headline target when the sea is working, while summer can offer varied sport around the kelp and gullers.

• Cod and codling are the main cold-water target, particularly when a northerly or north-easterly swell has coloured the water without making the shore unsafe.
• Coalfish, pollack and wrasse may be encountered around deeper rock, kelp margins and clear-water gullies.
• Mackerel can appear in season when the water is reasonably clear and there is enough depth close in.
• Rockling, shorthorn scorpionfish and other small rough-ground species are possible, particularly to worm or small fish baits worked close to structure.
• Dogfish and occasional bass are possible in suitable conditions, but neither should be treated as a reliable, year-round expectation at this small and changeable venue.

Fishing tactics should be built around avoiding snags, locating deeper gullies, and using robust gear appropriate to the sea state. The best casting direction and safe standing place can change with tide, swell and beach movement.

• For codling, use a strong beach-casting or rough-ground setup, a clipped-down pulley-style arrangement where appropriate, and abrasion-resistant terminal tackle.
• Crab, mussel, lugworm, ragworm and squid-based cocktails are traditional useful bait options for North Yorkshire rough ground; match the bait to the target species and available tackle.
• Keep hook traces relatively short around heavy kelp and broken rock, and use tackle you can retrieve firmly without being dangerously over-gunned for the terrain.
• In calmer weather, float-fished or lightly ledgered worm, crab and small strip baits can pick out wrasse and pollack close to kelp edges; only do this from a stable, safe position.
• Spinning or feathering can account for mackerel and pollack in clear summer water, but avoid casting where walkers, climbers, birds or other anglers could be put at risk.
• Do not wade to gain distance. At this type of coast, a modest cast into a proper gully is usually safer and more productive than trying to reach open water through surf.

Sea state is the deciding factor at Hayburn Wyke. A fishable coloured sea can be very productive for codling, but a marginal swell can rapidly turn the cove into an unsafe place with no easy escape.

• Fish generally feed best when there is sufficient depth over the rough ground, so the flooding tide, high-water period and early ebb are often worth investigating from safe ground.
• Low water can expose more rock and reveal channels, but it may also leave awkward kelp, shallow water and a long retreat over slippery terrain.
• For codling, look for a settled but coloured sea after suitable weather; avoid the mark if waves are breaking across the ledges or surge is entering the gullies.
• Calm, clearer summer seas are more favourable for mackerel, pollack and wrasse, though slack clear conditions can make some of the shore’s deeper features harder to reach.
• Dawn, dusk and night can improve fishing, but darkness adds major risk here. Anyone unfamiliar with the route should avoid a first visit after dark.
• Check the local tide prediction, wind direction, swell forecast and recent rainfall before leaving. If any part of the descent, shore crossing or exit looks doubtful, turn back.

This is an exposed natural shore with steep access, unstable footing and real tidal danger. It is unsuitable for anglers with limited mobility and should not be treated as a family-friendly or all-weather fishing location.

• Wear proper boots with dependable grip, warm waterproof layers, and a buoyancy aid when fishing close to the sea; carry a headtorch even for a daytime trip.
• Rockfall is a potential hazard beneath coastal cliffs and in ravines. Do not fish directly below visibly loose ground, overhangs or recently fallen debris.
• Never stand on low ledges in swell, turn your back on the sea, or cross a gully that may be cut off by the incoming tide.
• Fish with a companion where possible, tell somebody your plan and expected return time, and keep a charged phone protected from water.
• There is no simple emergency exit from the shore. In an emergency call 999 and ask for the Coastguard; give a clear description of the access route and landmark.
• Dogs, children and non-angling companions need especially careful management because the ravine, cliffs and wet rocks create hazards even in apparently calm weather.

Hayburn Wyke is a natural coastal site, not a serviced angling venue. Anglers should arrive self-sufficient and leave no trace.

• Do not expect toilets, tackle supplies, lighting, a slipway, sheltered fishing platforms or drinking water at the shore.
• Nearby roadside and hospitality facilities can change, so make any food, toilet and parking arrangements before walking down.
• Take all litter, discarded line, bait packaging and fish waste home; these can harm wildlife and create a poor experience for other coastal-path users.
• A compact first-aid kit, spare light, drinking water, tide information and a means of keeping a phone dry are sensible essentials.
• Keep access paths clear and be considerate of walkers, residents, land managers and other users of the coastal route.

A cautious reconnaissance in calm daylight is one of the most useful things an angler can do at Hayburn Wyke. Learn the path, identify an exit line, and watch how the tide fills the gullies before attempting a serious session.

• Arrive early enough to inspect the shore and select a safe, high-enough fishing stance before the tide rises.
• Use the natural deeper-looking channels between kelp and rock rather than repeatedly casting straight into the heaviest visible weed.
• Bring only the tackle needed for the intended method; a heavy tackle load makes the descent and return more hazardous.
• If you lose several rigs quickly, move or simplify the presentation rather than forcing a cast into an obvious snag field.
• After a period of rough weather, give the coast time to settle and reassess the access route: loose debris, altered boulders and muddy paths are common.
• Respect the setting. Keep noise low, avoid obstructing the coastal path, and do not damage vegetation or disturb wildlife to create a fishing platform.

Fishing is not known to be universally prohibited at Hayburn Wyke, but access is through a sensitive coastal landscape and local controls, temporary closures or land-management instructions may apply. The absence of a known blanket ban is not a substitute for checking conditions and notices on the day.

• Follow all posted National Trust, landowner, coastal-path and safety signage, including any directions concerning access, parking, dogs, wildlife or temporary closures.
• Check current national rules for recreational sea angling, including minimum conservation reference sizes, catch limits where applicable, protected species and any restrictions on bait collection or shellfish gathering.
• Check current North Eastern Inshore Fisheries and Conservation Authority and Marine Management Organisation information for local byelaws, protected-area measures and any seasonal or species-specific restrictions.
• Do not collect bait, remove rock or disturb shore habitat where notices prohibit it or where doing so would damage the site.
• Return unwanted fish carefully, retain only lawful and responsibly sized fish for the table, and never leave line, hooks or bait waste on the shore.
