Ravenscar

Ravenscar is a dramatic, predominantly rough-ground sea-fishing area on the North Yorkshire coast, with rock scars, kelp beds, gullies and occasional mixed-ground patches below high cliffs. It is best treated as a mobile, tide-dependent rock mark rather than an easy, all-weather platform.

• The venue can produce codling and coalfish in the colder months, with pollack, wrasse, mackerel and occasional bass more relevant in warmer, clearer conditions.
• Productive water and safe footing vary greatly between individual gullies and scars; a recce at low water is worthwhile before fishing a new section.
• The coastline is scenic but exposed, and the quality of the fishing should never tempt anglers into fishing beneath unstable cliffs or in a rising sea.

Ravenscar lies on the coastal road between Scarborough and Whitby, with the fishing generally referring to the rocky shore and scars below the village, former alum-working landscape and headland. Access is from the clifftop via public paths, but the descent and final approach to the shore can be steep, uneven and slippery.

• Start from the village and use established signed public routes; do not create shortcuts down the cliff or cross fenced, private or visibly unstable ground.
• The shore is broadest and easiest to inspect around low water, although the route back must be planned well before the flood tide covers gullies and cuts off exits.
• Some anglers walk along the foreshore from neighbouring access points when conditions allow, but this commits them to tide timing and should not be attempted without local knowledge.
• Carry gear in a rucksack or use a compact load; a large fishing trolley is impractical on the paths and rough foreshore.

Ravenscar’s broken rock, kelp and deeper gullies favour classic North Yorkshire rough-ground species, particularly when there is coloured water and movement in the sea. Species vary with season, sea state and the exact ground being fished.

• Codling are a principal autumn and winter target, especially after a manageable north-easterly sea has coloured the water without making the shore unsafe.
• Coalfish, pollack and wrasse are regular possibilities over kelp and rock, with pollack often responding well to clear-water lure or float fishing.
• Mackerel can show in summer and early autumn where there is enough clear water and depth; they are often taken on feathers, spinners and small metal lures.
• Whiting, dogfish and rockling may appear after dark or over mixed ground, while dabs, flounder and other flatfish are possible where a cast reaches cleaner sediment between the scars.
• Bass are possible in suitable warmer-water conditions, particularly around shallow rough ground and moving water, but they should be regarded as a bonus rather than a certainty.

Tackle should be selected for rough ground and the ability to retrieve fish through kelp, rather than for maximum casting distance alone. A simple approach matched to the tide and sea condition is usually more effective than carrying excessive gear down the cliff.

• For codling and mixed winter fishing, use a robust beachcaster or bass rod, a reliable reel, abrasion-resistant line and a pulley-style or other rough-ground rig suited to the snag risk.
• Fresh or well-presented crab, lugworm, ragworm, mussel and squid combinations are useful baits; crab and worm presentations are traditional choices around kelp and rock.
• Fish from the edge of a gully, the boundary between kelp and cleaner ground, or a channel that remains water-filled as the tide ebbs, rather than simply casting blindly over the roughest visible rock.
• For pollack and coalfish, work soft plastics, metal lures or a float-fished strip bait through deeper, clearer gullies, keeping the retrieve controlled and ready for a fast strike.
• Use strong hooks and avoid overlong, overly delicate traces in the roughest ground. Expect tackle losses, but move if every cast is becoming irretrievably snagged.

The mark is strongly governed by tide height, swell direction and water clarity. Low water is valuable for learning the layout, while the most fishable period is often determined by whether a particular gully has safe water and a clear retreat route.

• Check a current local tide table and allow a generous margin for returning to the clifftop; do not wait until the route is already being covered.
• A modestly coloured sea can be favourable for codling, whereas clear and settled water is generally better for lure, float and spinning tactics for pollack, wrasse and mackerel.
• North-easterly swell can quickly make the scars dangerous, wash weed across the shore and remove safe footing. Even a sea that looks manageable from above can be hazardous at water level.
• Avoid exposed ledges during large swell, strong onshore winds, thunderstorms, fog or darkness unless you know the exact route and conditions exceptionally well.
• Early morning, evening and night can fish well, but limited light materially increases the risk of slipping, losing the path or being cut off.

Ravenscar is not an easy-access fishing venue: cliffs, uneven paths, sharp rock, weed, sudden depth changes and tide cut-off risk are all part of the mark. It is best suited to fit, properly equipped anglers who are confident on rough coastal terrain.

• Wear supportive boots with grippy soles, layered waterproof clothing and a buoyancy aid when fishing close to the water; studs can help on some rock but do not make weed-covered surfaces safe.
• Take a headtorch, fully charged phone, first-aid kit, spare warm layer and a means of signalling for help. Tell someone where you are going and when you expect to return.
• Never fish directly beneath a cliff face or overhang: coastal rockfall can occur without warning, including in apparently dry and calm weather.
• Watch the sea continuously, not just the tide table. Individual waves can surge much farther up gullies and platforms than the preceding sets.
• The route is unsuitable for wheelchairs, most pushchairs and anglers with limited mobility; there is no dependable level, barrier-free route from the village to the fishing ground.
• Do not fish alone in rough conditions, and call emergency services if someone is washed in, injured or trapped by the tide rather than attempting a hazardous rescue yourself.

Ravenscar has limited village amenities, while the shore itself has no fishing-specific facilities. Treat parking, toilet availability and opening arrangements as variable and confirm them before travelling.

• Use legitimate village or visitor parking and observe any payment, time-limit or overnight restrictions displayed on site.
• Public toilets and visitor services may be seasonal or subject to changed opening arrangements; do not rely on them for an early or late session.
• Shops, fuel, bait and extensive food options are limited locally, so bring bait, drinking water, food, spare terminal tackle and a litter bag with you.
• Nearby towns offer more reliable tackle, bait and emergency supplies, but it is sensible to obtain essentials before arriving at the clifftop.
• Take all line, hooks, bait packaging and litter home. Lost line is particularly hazardous to seabirds and marine life around this rocky coast.

Ravenscar rewards observation more than repeated long casting. Anglers who identify safe channels, kelp edges and clean pockets on a calm low tide will make much better decisions when returning to fish the flood.

• Arrive well before the intended fishing window so that the walk down, route assessment and setting up are not rushed.
• Travel light, retain a clear path behind your position and keep your bag above the expected wash line.
• If fishing bait in rough water, make casts only as far as necessary to reach a productive gully or edge; shorter, controlled casts often hold better and are easier to retrieve.
• In clearer summer conditions, move quietly between likely gullies with a small lure outfit rather than committing to one snaggy rock platform for the whole session.
• Speak to local tackle shops or experienced local anglers for up-to-date information on access changes, weed, recent cliff instability and which sections are safely fishable.
• Leave room for walkers and other shore users, and avoid blocking narrow paths with rods or equipment.

There is no general freshwater rod-licence requirement for ordinary recreational sea angling in England, but national fisheries rules and site-specific access conditions can still apply. Ravenscar is within a sensitive heritage and coastal environment, so anglers should fish responsibly and verify the latest official position before each visit.

• Ravenscar is associated with the Ravenscar Marine Conservation Zone; this does not automatically mean rod-and-line angling is prohibited, but anglers should avoid damaging habitats and check current official guidance and any relevant byelaws.
• Follow current national rules for protected species, minimum landing sizes, catch limits and any seasonal restrictions, especially for bass and shellfish. These rules can change, so check official government and fisheries authority sources rather than relying on old advice.
• Check notices from land managers, the local authority and the North Eastern Inshore Fisheries and Conservation Authority for temporary closures, access restrictions, bait-collection controls or local byelaws.
• Fish only from land and routes where public access is permitted. Respect signs, fencing, conservation work, livestock, private property and any cliff-path closure.
• If signage at the chosen access point states that fishing or entry is not permitted, use another lawful location rather than assuming the wider coastline has the same access rights.
