Boggle Hole

5.8· Rocks · North Yorkshire

Boggle Hole is a tidal, rocky North Yorkshire shore mark below the old mill and coastal path, with rough scars, kelp gullies and boulder-strewn ground rather than easy open beach fishing. Access is a walk down from the valley/car park area and fishing is best planned around a settled sea and workable tide; it is a classic rough-ground venue for codling and other rock-edge species, but snags, swell and the rising tide demand care.

Boggle Hole is a mobile, tide-conscious rough-ground mark rather than a cast-and-wait beach. Its fishing comes from locating workable kelp gullies, rough margins and the occasional cleaner sand or shingle gap, then matching tackle to the ground. A flooding tide is the key working period, but only after a low-water look at the foreshore and exit routes.

  • Fish the flood only after mapping Boggle Hole’s gullies and exits at low water.
  • Put cod baits on workable rough-ground edges, not straight into the thickest kelp.
  • Switch to cleaner gaps beside the scars for night whiting, pouting and dogfish chances.
  • Know when Boggle Hole is too exposed—and when to consider a nearby alternative.
