Stoupe Beck

• Codling and cod are the principal autumn and winter quarry, especially when a moderate coloured sea has worked over the rough ground.
• Coalfish can be present around deeper kelp and rock edges, often taking both bait and small lures.
• Pollack, wrasse and occasional mackerel provide useful summer sport where there is sufficiently clear water and safe access to deeper water.
• Bass may occur in the warmer months, particularly around moving water, gullies and coloured conditions, though they should never be assumed at a small rocky mark.
• Rockling, small flatfish and other minor species may show over the mixed patches, depending on where a bait is presented.

Fishing at Stoupe Beck is generally about presenting a robust bait close to fish-holding rough ground, not simply casting as far as possible. Match tackle weight and rig strength to the sea, but avoid excessively heavy gear that will only wedge in the kelp and cracks.

• For cod and coalfish, use a strong shore rod and abrasion-resistant main line or leader, with a simple pulley or clipped-down rough-ground rig where casting requires it.

• Do not fish beneath unstable cliffs or overhangs, particularly after rain, frost or high winds; rockfall can occur without warning.
• Wear grippy boots, suitable warm and waterproof clothing, and a buoyancy aid where there is any realistic chance of being washed in or trapped by rising water.
• Never turn your back on the sea. Watch the water for a period before selecting a platform, as occasional larger sets can reach well beyond the average wave line.
• Avoid fishing alone, especially at night or in a swell. Tell someone your plan, expected return time and access point.
• Keep well clear of the beck in spate and do not attempt to cross fast-moving water or wave-washed gullies.
• There is no practical wheelchair access to the fishing ground, and the descent is unsuitable for anglers with limited mobility or anyone unable to carry their equipment over rough terrain.
• Take all litter, discarded line and bait packaging home; these are particularly hazardous around wildlife-rich cliffs and shorelines.

Facilities are limited at the shore itself, and anglers should arrive self-sufficient. The nearest services are generally found away from the beach in the surrounding villages and visitor areas.

• There are no dependable toilets, drinking-water points, tackle shops or shelters on the foreshore.
• Bring drinking water, food, a first-aid kit, a charged phone and enough light for any late return.
• Carry a compact tackle load; a trolley is unlikely to be useful on the steep, rough approach.
• Check current parking restrictions, charges and closing arrangements locally before leaving a vehicle for an evening or night session.
• Mobile signal can be variable around cliffs and in folds of the land, so do not depend solely on a phone for navigation or safety.

A first daylight visit at a modest tide is the best way to understand Stoupe Beck. The value of the mark lies in finding a safe platform and a clean-enough lane through the rough ground, rather than forcing a cast from the first place that reaches the sea.

• Reconnoitre the shore in calm daylight and identify the exit route, tide line, gullies and likely snag-free channels before attempting a night or winter session.
• Keep casts purposeful and relatively short when fish are feeding in the kelp fringe; a well-placed bait can outfish a long cast into featureless or snaggy ground.
• If a swell is lifting over your intended ledge, move back or leave. There is usually no fish worth the risk on this kind of coast.
• Bring spare rigs, leads and hooks, but use tackle robust enough to land fish promptly and reduce the amount of terminal gear left behind.
