Robin Hood’s Bay is a classic North Yorkshire rock-and-scar shore mark, valued for rough-ground cod fishing in colder, coloured conditions and mixed summer sport over the reefs. It is a rewarding but physically demanding venue: the fishable ground is extensive, yet success depends heavily on tide height, sea state and a safe route off the rocks.

• The bay is best treated as a collection of marks rather than one single casting platform, with rocky scars, kelp beds, gullies and deeper channels exposed around low water.
• Autumn and winter generally bring the strongest chance of cod and coalfish, while warmer months offer pollack, wrasse, mackerel and occasional bass.
• Expect tackle losses on much of the rougher ground; fishing clean patches, gullies and the edges of scars is usually more productive than casting blindly across kelp-covered rock.
• The old village makes an attractive base, but its steep streets, restricted vehicle access and tidal shoreline mean that planning matters as much as tackle choice.

Robin Hood’s Bay lies on the North Yorkshire coast between Whitby and Scarborough, with the old village descending steeply to the beach, slipway and rocky foreshore. Anglers commonly access the shore from the village end, then work along the exposed scars only when there is a clearly safe route and enough time before the tide returns.

• The main shore access is around the beach and slipway at the bottom of the old village; from there, low tide reveals broad rock platforms and kelp-covered reefs.
• Parking is generally easier outside the old village, with a steep walk down and, importantly, back up afterwards. Check current parking arrangements, restrictions and payment requirements locally.
• The foreshore changes character quickly: apparently open rock can give way to deep gullies, broken ledges and weed-covered slabs.
• Do not assume that a route used on the way out will remain passable on the return. Identify a safe exit point before fishing and allow a generous margin for the incoming tide.

The bay supports a useful range of North Sea shore species, with the target list changing markedly through the year and with water clarity. Cod and coalfish are the headline fish for many local anglers, but summer fishing can be varied and enjoyable.

• Cod are the principal cold-water target, especially when autumn or winter seas have coloured the water and pushed food around the reefs and gullies.
• Coalfish can appear alongside cod, particularly over deeper broken ground and around the edges of kelp.
• Pollack are a realistic warmer-water target around rocky structure, gullies and clearer water; smaller fish are common, though better fish are possible.
• Ballan wrasse and corkwing wrasse inhabit the kelp and rough ground through the warmer months, providing good close-range sport.
• Mackerel may be available in summer and early autumn when shoals move close to the coast, particularly in settled conditions and deeper water.
• Bass are possible in summer, especially where a little colour, moving water and bait are present, but they are not a dependable catch on every visit.
• Whiting, pouting, dogfish, dabs and other mixed ground fish can also turn up, depending on season, bait and the patch being fished.

Fishing methods should match the ground rather than simply chasing maximum casting distance. The productive areas are often close in, at the mouths of gullies, alongside kelp beds or over a known patch of cleaner seabed.

• For cod and coalfish, use robust beachcasting or rock-fishing tackle capable of controlling fish and terminal gear in heavy kelp and broken ground.
• A pulley-style rig, pennel arrangement or other snag-resistant rough-ground presentation is useful when fishing large natural baits. Carry spare rigs, leads and hooks because losses are normal.
• Fresh or well-presented lugworm, ragworm, crab baits, mussel and squid combinations can all take fish; local conditions and bait availability often determine the best choice.
• In coloured, lively water, a substantial bait fished into a gully or over the edge of a scar is often more effective than casting far onto featureless ground.
• For pollack and mackerel, spinners, metal lures, soft plastics and light legered baits can work well where the water is deep enough and the tackle can be retrieved clear of kelp.
• Wrasse respond well to smaller crab, worm or shellfish baits lowered or lightly cast close to structure. Use sufficiently strong line to turn a fish before it reaches cover.
• Keep casts controlled and retrieve steadily over rough ground. A fast, thoughtless retrieve is an easy way to bury terminal tackle in kelp or a crevice.

Tide and sea state dictate both fishing quality and whether the shore is safe to use. Low water exposes the scars and helps an angler read the ground, but much of the best fishing is commonly around the flood, over high water or as a moderate sea begins to work into the bay.

• Visit first in daylight and around a suitable low tide to identify gullies, clean channels, kelp lines and safe walking routes.
• The first part of the flood can be particularly useful where it brings water over exposed feeding ground, while high water can give access to deeper water close in.
• A moderate swell that puts colour into the sea is often favourable for cod, provided it does not make the ledges unsafe or cut off the exit.
• Calm, clear summer conditions tend to suit pollack, wrasse and mackerel better than they suit serious cod fishing.
• Strong onshore weather can make the bay dangerous very quickly. Wave surge can reach well beyond the obvious waterline, especially around gullies and lower platforms.
• Avoid being committed to low-lying scars near high water, in darkness, or when the forecast and actual sea are worsening. Tide tables and marine weather forecasts should be checked immediately before travel.

Robin Hood’s Bay is not a casual promenade mark once you leave the beach or slipway area. Slippery weed, uneven rock, steep approaches, fast-rising water and wave wash make sensible timing and personal safety equipment essential.

• Wear grippy boots with good ankle support, warm waterproof clothing and a buoyancy aid when fishing exposed rock close to the sea.
• Carry a headtorch even for a daytime session, keep a charged phone in a waterproof case and tell somebody where you are going and when you expect to return.
• Never fish alone on unfamiliar scars if a swell is running, and do not turn your back on the sea. Watch the water for several minutes before choosing a position.
• Keep well away from the cliff base where possible: coastal cliffs can shed rock without warning, particularly after wet or frosty weather.
• Children, inexperienced anglers and people with limited mobility are better suited to the beach or slipway vicinity in benign conditions, rather than the outer rocky platforms.
• The old village approach involves steep gradients and uneven, often busy streets. Access is therefore limited for wheelchairs, fishing trolleys and anyone unable to manage a demanding walk.
• If the tide, swell or route feels questionable, leave it. There will always be another tide; a fish is never worth becoming trapped or swept from a ledge.

Robin Hood’s Bay has village amenities, but anglers should not rely on the shoreline itself for fishing-specific services. Arrive self-sufficient, particularly for an early start, late finish or winter session.

• Shops, cafés, pubs and public conveniences may be available in or near the village, but opening hours and seasonal arrangements can change; check before travelling.
• Obtain bait in advance unless you have confirmed a current local supplier. Dedicated bait availability in small coastal villages can be variable.
• Take drinking water, food, spare clothing, a first-aid kit, a landing net or drop net where appropriate, and enough spare terminal tackle for rough ground.
• There are litter bins in the village, but every angler should take line, bait packaging, broken rigs and all other waste home if bins are full or unavailable.
• Avoid blocking narrow lanes, access points, residents’ entrances or working areas around the slipway and harbour-side parts of the village.

The most reliable approach is to fish Robin Hood’s Bay as a venue that rewards observation. A daytime recce at low water can save repeated tackle losses and helps reveal the channels that become productive once the tide covers them.

• Travel light enough to move safely, but do not economise on spare end tackle: rough ground frequently claims leads and rigs.
• Ask locally about the current state of access, recent cliff falls, parking and bait supply; conditions on this coast can change after storms.
• For cod, concentrate on periods of water movement and colour rather than bright, crystal-clear, flat-calm conditions.
• For summer species, work lures and smaller baits around visible kelp edges and deeper gullies instead of casting over the shallowest reef tops.
• Fish with consideration for walkers, families and residents, especially around the slipway and beach. Keep rods, casts and bait preparation well clear of public thoroughfares.
• Respect the foreshore’s wildlife and geology: replace turned stones where practical, avoid disturbing nesting birds or rock-pool life, and leave the mark cleaner than you found it.

There is no general indication that recreational shore angling at Robin Hood’s Bay is universally prohibited, but access conditions and conservation rules can vary by exact stretch of foreshore. Check current notices at access points and consult official sources before fishing, particularly if you intend to retain fish or collect bait.

• Parts of this coastline are environmentally sensitive and may fall within designated conservation areas. Such designations do not automatically ban rod fishing, but they can affect activities such as bait digging, collecting shellfish, removing natural material or using particular access areas.
