Whitestone Point

Whitestone Point is a rugged North Yorkshire rock mark suited to anglers who are comfortable fishing uneven, kelp-covered ground rather than expecting an easy, open-beach session. It is principally a rough-ground venue, with the best prospects generally coming from working baits or lures close to gullies, weed lines and deeper water around the point.

The mark is on the North Yorkshire coast and is approached via coastal paths and/or the cliff-top access available locally; the final approach can be steep, rough and highly tide-dependent. Treat the name as a broad area rather than assuming there is one safe, obvious peg, and inspect the route in daylight before carrying tackle down.

Whitestone Point is best regarded as a mixed rocky-shore mark, with species varying greatly with season, sea state and the amount of kelp and sand present. Autumn and winter sessions are usually aimed at larger rough-ground fish, while summer offers more lure and light-tackle opportunities.

Heavy rough-ground tactics are the sensible starting point when fishing the kelp and broken rock, while mobile lure fishing can be effective when the water is clear enough to work safely. Carry only what you can safely manage on the climb and keep terminal tackle practical for snaggy ground.

Fishable water and safe access can change quickly here, especially around a rising tide or after an onshore blow. A little coloured water often improves bait fishing, but heavy swell can make the ledges dangerous or entirely unfishable.

This is not an easy-access mark: wet rock, slime, loose ground, swell and a retreating tide are the principal hazards. It is unsuitable for anglers who cannot negotiate rough coastal terrain or who need step-free access.

Facilities should not be expected at the point itself, so arrive self-sufficient and use nearby settlements for parking, food, toilets and other services where available. Do not obstruct access routes, gates, farm entrances or emergency access when parking.

A first visit is best made at low water in calm daylight, purely to identify gullies, safe casting positions and an exit route before committing to a fishing session. The most productive-looking water is not necessarily the safest place to stand, so choose a peg with a clear escape route.

There is no basis here to state that sea angling is universally prohibited at Whitestone Point, but local restrictions, landowner conditions and temporary closures can apply. Check current official signage, local authority information and any coastal-access notices before fishing, and follow current national rules for retained fish and shellfish.
