It is chiefly a flat, sandy venue rather than a rough-ground cod mark, but its gutters, river influence and proximity to the harbour can produce varied fishing when conditions are right.

• Take all line, bait packaging, broken rigs and litter home. Lost line on a busy beach is a serious hazard to wildlife, dogs and other users.
• Mobile coverage is often reasonable around Whitby, though this should not replace carrying a charged phone and telling someone your intended return time for night sessions.

Success at Whitby Beach usually comes from reading the beach and adapting to its changing shape rather than treating it as a fixed casting platform. A short reconnaissance walk at lower water can reveal channels, banks and firm routes for the coming tide.

• Arrive early in summer or fish dawn, dusk and darkness to avoid the busiest bathing periods and to give fish a greater chance of moving close.
• Walk the intended section first and identify a safe line of retreat before committing rods and tackle to the sand.
