Whitby Beach

6.4· Beach · North Yorkshire

Whitby Beach is a broad, sandy tidal shore on the west side of the town, reached easily from the promenade and nearby car parks, with steps or slopes down to the sand. It is mainly a clean-ground beach mark for distance casting, flatfish and winter cod/whiting, while the pier-side and rockier margins can produce more mixed fishing; tide, surf and holiday-season crowds strongly affect comfort and access.

Whitby Beach is primarily a clean-sand, feature-led beach mark rather than a fixed-distance or rough-ground venue. The long west-of-harbour frontage is best approached by finding gutters, darker water, channel edges and surf lines, then fishing the flood, high-water period or early ebb while there is enough water over the sand. It offers its strongest seasonal draws in autumn to spring for whiting and dabs, with winter cod possible in coloured water and moderate surf; spring and summer favour plaice, flounder and occasional bass.

  • Fish the changing gutters, not just the longest cast
  • Time the flood and high water for usable depth over the sand
  • Match Whitby’s clean ground with compact rigs and tidy worm baits
  • Know when coloured surf helps—and when it makes the beach unfishable
  • Have a conditions-checked backup when crowds, weed or surf spoil the sand
