Sandsend Beach

Sandsend Beach is a picturesque but genuinely productive open-shore mark immediately north of Whitby, combining clean sand, mixed ground and rocky scars. It is most often fished for winter codling and whiting, though the beach can produce throughout the year when conditions suit.

• A useful venue for anglers who prefer beach fishing but want access to deeper gullies and rougher ground within casting range.
• The character of the mark changes greatly with tide height and sea state: a flat-looking beach at high water reveals channels, sandbars and rock at low tide.

Sandsend lies on the North Yorkshire coast just north of Whitby, with the main beach running alongside the village and extending towards rocky ground at either end. Access is straightforward in daylight, but parking and the beach itself can become very busy in the holiday season.

A simple two-rod approach works well at Sandsend: one baited line aimed at the fishable gutter or rough edge and another positioned over cleaner sand. Tackle must match the conditions, as a gentle summer surf and a winter sea require very different leads, rigs and casting choices.

• For codling and whiting, use robust beach gear, a clipped one- or two-hook rig, and enough lead to hold bottom safely in the tide and surf.
• Fresh or well-presented worm, crab, mussel, squid and fish baits are all conventional choices; select bait and hook size according to the species sought and the amount of small-fish activity.

Low water is invaluable for reconnaissance at Sandsend, revealing the gullies, sand tongues and rocky scars that are hidden later. Fishing often improves from the flooding tide into high water, but the best state depends on the target species, chosen section and sea conditions.

• Walk the beach at low tide and note safe routes, deeper channels and the limits of rock before returning to fish a higher tide.
• A building or recently subsiding northerly/easterly sea can colour the water and bring winter codling closer, but it can also make the venue unfishable and hazardous.
• Moderate surf is often an advantage for shore species; very clear, calm water can favour lighter flatfish tactics and more discreet presentations.
• Dusk and darkness are especially useful for whiting and winter fishing, provided the angler has checked the route and tide in daylight.
• Avoid being cut off on the rocky ends: the incoming tide can cover lower routes quickly, and wave run-up may reach well beyond the apparent waterline.

The main sandy beach is among the more accessible styles of North Yorkshire shore venue, but it remains an exposed North Sea beach with fast-changing weather, surf and tides. Rocky sections, wet weed and darkness add significantly to the risk.

• Check a reliable tide forecast and weather/marine forecast before setting out, and leave a generous margin for the return walk.
• Do not fish close to the water's edge in a heavy sea; unexpected larger sets can sweep across sand, rocks and access routes.
• Wear suitable footwear with grip, carry a headtorch after dark, and keep a fully charged phone protected from water.
• Never turn your back on the sea, particularly near scars, channels and the ends of the beach.
• The central promenade-side access and firm sand can suit anglers with limited mobility in favourable conditions, but soft patches, steps, crowds and seasonal congestion may still be barriers.
• Be considerate of walkers, swimmers, children and dogs; cast only when the area behind and in front is clear.

Sandsend has useful village facilities close to the beach, making it more convenient than many remote Yorkshire marks. Availability and opening hours vary with season, so anglers should not rely on services late at night.

• There are public parking options nearby, though payment arrangements, time limits and overnight rules should be checked on arrival.
• Cafes, food outlets and toilets are commonly available around the village/seafront area, subject to seasonal opening and local arrangements.
• Shops and wider services are available in nearby Whitby if bait, tackle or supplies cannot be obtained locally.
• Take litter, discarded line and bait packaging home; bins can be full during busy periods and wildlife readily encounters fishing waste.

The most productive anglers at Sandsend are usually those who spend time locating features rather than committing immediately to the first convenient patch of sand. A short daytime scout can be worth more than extra casting distance.

• Fish away from the busiest bathing and family areas where possible, particularly in summer, and choose quieter hours for safer, more comfortable casting.
• The transitions between sand and rock can be better than either uniform sand or heavily snaggy ground alone.
• If the sea is rough enough to make Sandsend unsafe, do not try to force the session; conditions on this coast can deteriorate rapidly.
• Carry spare rigs and leads, but fish thoughtfully around scars to reduce snagging and tackle loss.
