Sandsend Ness

Sandsend Ness is a rugged, kelp-covered rock mark on the headland at the south end of Sandsend, immediately north-west of Whitby. It is a productive but committing venue: the ground can hold good fish, especially in a coloured sea, but safe timing and a sensible retreat are more important than squeezing in an extra cast.

• It is principally a rough-ground mark rather than an easy beach-fishing venue.
• Expect snaggy gullies, uneven rock shelves and varying water depth rather than clean casting terrain.
• It can produce well for anglers prepared to fish short sessions around favourable tide, sea state and light levels.

The Ness is reached from Sandsend village and its seafront, with the rock mark lying around the headland towards Whitby. Access should be treated as tidal and route-dependent; use established public paths and the foreshore only where conditions allow.

• Park in Sandsend using the designated parking areas, then walk towards the southern end of the bay and the Ness rather than attempting to drive to the rocks.
• A walk over the beach and lower rocks may be possible on a suitable falling or low tide, but the route can be cut off as the tide returns.
• Do not descend cliff faces, scramble down unmaintained slopes or cross private land in search of a shortcut.
• Walk the intended route in daylight before planning a dawn, dusk or night session, and identify a high, safe exit point.
• The final approach is over slippery, irregular rock and is unsuitable for carrying excessive tackle.

Sandsend Ness offers the usual North Yorkshire rough-ground mix, with the best prospects changing considerably with season, sea colour and water temperature. Codling are the headline target in the colder, rougher part of the year, while summer brings more lure and light-tackle opportunities.

• Cod and codling are the main winter target, particularly after a moderate northerly or easterly sea has coloured the water without making the ledges unfishable.
• Coalfish, pollack and occasional bass may take lures or baits around deeper kelp edges and gullies.
• Ballan wrasse and smaller rockling are regular warm-water rough-ground captures; handle wrasse carefully and return them promptly.
• Mackerel can appear in summer and early autumn when clear water and baitfish are present.
• Dab, flounder and other cleaner-ground species are more naturally sought from the adjacent Sandsend beach than from the snaggy Ness itself.

Fish the mark with tackle matched to rough ground and be prepared to lose some terminal gear. Short, controlled casts into identifiable channels are often more useful than casting as far as possible across kelp.

• For codling, use a robust beachcaster, a 5–7 oz-style casting weight appropriate to the sea, and abrasion-resistant line or a suitable leader system.
• Pulley-style or pennel rigs with strong hooks are sensible for lifting fish away from kelp; keep rigs simple and carry spare traces.
• Fresh or well-presented crab, lugworm, mussel, squid and fish baits are all worth carrying, with crab often especially useful around rough Yorkshire rock.
• Fish baits close to kelp fringes and the mouths of gullies, but do not leave them unattended long enough to become firmly bedded in snags.
• For pollack and coalfish, work soft plastics, metal lures or shallow-to-medium diving plugs steadily through clear-water gullies; use a landing net only where there is a genuinely safe place to deploy it.
• A long-handled gaff is not a substitute for safe landing access: if a fish cannot be landed without dangerous scrambling, choose another position or release it.

This is a mark where tide, swell and water colour govern both catchability and safety. A fishable sea can become hazardous quickly around a headland, especially when swell wraps around the Ness.

• Fish generally move and feed best around the tide change, but the precise productive stage varies with the chosen ledge and depth of water.
• A building flood may improve depth over the kelp, while a falling tide can reveal access routes and features; never allow this to tempt you into staying below a safe escape line.
• Moderate coloured water after an onshore blow is the classic codling scenario, whereas clearer, calmer summer water favours pollack, wrasse and mackerel tactics.
• Avoid the mark in heavy swell, strong onshore winds, poor visibility or when waves are reaching the ledges you intend to stand on.
• Check the local tide table, wind direction, swell forecast and daylight window immediately before travelling; conditions at exposed headlands are often worse than they appear from inland.

Sandsend Ness is not an easy-access sea-fishing mark and should be approached as exposed rock fishing. It is unsuitable for anyone unable to move confidently over wet, uneven ground or to retreat quickly when conditions change.

• Wear studded or cleated footwear, warm waterproof layers and a properly fitted buoyancy aid; smooth-soled footwear is inappropriate on kelp-covered rock.
• Fish with a companion where possible, tell someone your plan, and carry a charged phone in a waterproof case.
• Keep well back from wave-washed edges and never turn your back on the sea; occasional larger sets can reach well beyond the apparent wash line.
• Do not fish a ledge with only one low or tide-dependent exit, particularly after dark.
• Head-torches are useful for returning safely, but darkness greatly increases the risk on this ground; first visits are best made in daylight and calm conditions.
• There is no practical wheelchair access to the rock mark, and the approach is also likely to be difficult for anglers with limited mobility.

Sandsend village provides the practical basics for a fishing trip, but the Ness itself is a natural, undeveloped mark with no fishing infrastructure. Organise food, tackle and tide information before walking out to the rocks.

• Public parking is available in and around Sandsend, though availability, charges and restrictions can change; check the current signs on arrival.
• Shops, cafés and public conveniences may be available in the village or seafront area, but opening arrangements can be seasonal.
• There are no toilets, shelters, tackle bins or safe fish-cleaning facilities on the Ness.
• Take all litter, discarded line, bait packaging and damaged rigs home; lost line is particularly harmful around kelp and seabird habitat.

The best approach at Sandsend Ness is to fish selectively rather than force the mark in poor conditions. Spend time watching the water from a safe height: darker channels, moving foam lines and the edge of the kelp often reveal more than a long cast does.

• Arrive early enough to assess the sea and walk the exit route before setting up.
• Travel light, but take plenty of spare rigs, weights and hooks because tackle losses are part of fishing rough ground.
• Keep casts accurate and retrieve firmly once a fish is hooked; allowing a fish to dive through kelp usually ends in a lost rig.
• In a big autumn or winter sea, consider whether a more sheltered local beach or harbour-side option is the safer choice rather than attempting the Ness.
• Respect walkers, swimmers and other shoreline users, particularly during the busy summer season, and avoid casting where people may enter the water.

There is no general indication that recreational sea angling at Sandsend Ness is universally prohibited, but access and fishing can be affected by local notices, land-management rules, conservation measures and temporary safety restrictions. Anglers must check the current position rather than relying on old reports.

• Read all signs at parking areas, footpaths and access points, and comply with any temporary closure, cliff-safety or private-land instruction.
• In England, a standard Environment Agency rod licence is generally not required solely for sea fishing, but different rules can apply if targeting migratory fish or fishing connected freshwater; check the official guidance if relevant.
• Observe current national and local minimum-size, protected-species, catch-limit and landing rules for any fish or shellfish retained.
• Check official local authority, harbour authority and marine-management information for any byelaws or conservation restrictions that may affect the area.
• Return undersized, unwanted and vulnerable fish carefully, and do not remove bait, shellfish or other marine life where notices or local restrictions prohibit it.
