Whitby West Pier

7.0· Pier · North Yorkshire

Whitby West Pier is a long, publicly accessible harbour pier reached on foot from the west side of Whitby, with railings and a firm promenade-style surface for much of its length. It offers deep, tide-ridden water and open North Sea casting from the outer sections, producing seasonal mackerel and pollack in summer and cod, whiting and coalfish through autumn and winter; it can be very exposed in easterly weather and rough seas.

Whitby West Pier is a weather-led harbour-mouth pier: its deep, moving water and seaward reach give it strong seasonal potential, but the right decision is often whether conditions are fishable at all. Use the seaward-facing side for open-water depth and seasonal pelagic fishing, switch attention to harbour influence only when seeking the more sheltered flounder option, and let sea state and water colour dictate the session.

  • Know when the seaward face is worth fishing—and when it is not.
  • Match coloured-water cod tactics to this pier’s tide seams and close-in depth.
  • Turn calm summer water into a mackerel and pollack session.
  • Use the harbour-facing side selectively for the flounder option.
  • Make a clear call on swell, spray, weed and side pull before setting up.
