Two Tree Island

Two Tree Island is a tidal Thames-estuary mark off Leigh-on-Sea, known more for its open mudflat-and-channel fishing than for comfortable promenade-style casting. It can produce a worthwhile mixed bag, particularly rays and summer species, but it is a serious tide-and-mud venue rather than an easy casual session.

• The attraction is the broad estuary water and the channels running off the flats, which can concentrate fish as the tide covers and drains the shore.
• Expect conditions to be exposed, tidal and often very muddy; catches are strongly influenced by season, tide height, water clarity and bait quality.
• It is best approached as a mobile, daylight mark by anglers who are comfortable reading an estuary and retreating well before the water cuts off access.

The island lies beside the Thames Estuary at Leigh-on-Sea, with access generally made on foot from the mainland-side approach and public paths around the reserve/foreshore. Exact usable fishing positions can change with erosion, vegetation, gates, maintenance work and the state of the tide.

• Do not assume that every path, seawall or bank gives lawful fishing access: use established routes, respect gates and keep clear of private land, operational areas and signed wildlife-sensitive ground.
• The walk can be uneven and exposed, and carrying a full beach-fishing load over soft ground is tiring; a compact rucksack setup is much more practical than a heavy trolley.
• Plan your return route before fishing. Rising water can cover low ground and turn a straightforward walk into a dangerous one.
• Parking, toilets, food and other amenities are generally better sought in Leigh-on-Sea rather than on the island itself.

Two Tree Island is a mixed Thames-estuary venue, with the better prospects varying markedly between warmer and colder months. Rays are the species most anglers associate with the area, while smaller estuary fish can provide sport throughout much of the year.

• Spring and summer: thornback ray, smooth-hound, bass, flounder, eel and occasional sole are realistic targets when conditions suit.
• Autumn and winter: thornback ray may still feature, alongside whiting, flounder, dabs and other small estuary species; larger cod are not something to rely upon.
• All year, conditions permitting: small rays, flounder and eels are among the more characteristic catches, with dogfish and other visitors possible in the deeper or more saline water.
• Species presence is never guaranteed in this shallow, tidal environment, and water temperature, freshwater runoff and the strength of the tide can make a large difference.

Long casts are not automatically the answer here: finding a cleaner channel, a drop-off or the edge of moving water is usually more valuable than simply casting as far as possible. Fish safely from firm ground and choose tackle that will hold bottom without encouraging you to stand close to soft mud.

• For rays, use a robust beach rod, a reel with sensible line capacity and a pulley or clipped one-hook rig carrying a strong, appropriately sized hook; squid, sandeel, bluey-type oily baits, crab and fish strips are common choices.
• For flounder, whiting and general mixed fishing, a two-hook flapper or clipped two-hook rig with smaller hooks and strips of worm, ragworm, lugworm or fish bait can be effective.
• Use a grip lead suited to the tidal pull, but scale weight to the actual conditions rather than automatically using the heaviest lead available.
• Keep baits fresh, change washed-out baits promptly and use a rod rest set well back from the tide line.
• A headtorch, landing glove and long-nose pliers are useful, but avoid night fishing unless you know the access, exit route and tide pattern very well.

The mark is governed by the tide. Productive water commonly arrives as the flooding tide reaches the channels and margins, while the falling tide can also fish well until access becomes compromised.

• A common starting plan is to fish the latter part of the flood and the first part of the ebb, adjusting after observing where water is moving and where fishable ground remains.
• Very low water can leave extensive mud and put fish beyond sensible casting range; do not attempt to cross mudflats to chase the retreating sea.
• Moderate tidal movement is often easier to fish than a full-strength spring tide, when grip leads may struggle and the shore changes quickly.
• Westerly or south-westerly weather can make the estuary uncomfortable and rougher than expected, while strong winds can also make casting and safe footing difficult.
• Rain and freshwater influence can colour the estuary and alter salinity; this can help some species but can make others patchy.

This is not a fully accessible hard-standing fishing venue. The combination of soft estuarine mud, fast-rising water, slippery surfaces and an unlit return route demands conservative decision-making.

• Never walk onto or across mudflats unless you have local, current knowledge of the ground; estuary mud can be deep, unstable and difficult to escape from.
• Check local tide information before leaving home, allow a generous safety margin and leave well before the incoming tide can cut off your route.
• Fish with a companion where possible, tell someone your plan, carry a charged phone in a waterproof pouch and take a reliable light for any dusk session.
• Wear boots with good grip and clothing suitable for wind and spray. Waders can be hazardous on soft mud and should not be used to push out into the estuary.
• The uneven approach, soft banks and lack of level platforms make the mark unsuitable for many wheelchair users and difficult for anglers with restricted mobility.

There are no dependable angling facilities on Two Tree Island itself, so it is important to arrive self-sufficient and leave the reserve exactly as you found it. Leigh-on-Sea offers the nearest practical range of shops, refreshments and public amenities.

• Take drinking water, bait, a first-aid kit, a light, spare batteries and all tackle needed for the session.
• There may be no bins at the fishing area: take home line, bait wrappers, food packaging and any discarded tackle.
• Avoid leaving vehicles or valuables in isolated places, and do not obstruct access roads, gates, paths or local residents.
• Use toilet facilities before walking out; do not foul the reserve or shoreline.

A quiet, observant approach generally pays better here than treating the place as a wide-open casting field. Spend time watching the water on arrival and be prepared to move only along safe, permitted ground if a channel is clearly fishing better.

• Arrive in daylight for a first visit so that you can identify firm standing areas, the route back and any warning signs before the tide rises.
• Look for darker, smoother water, tide seams and small channels rather than casting blindly over featureless exposed flat.
• Keep rods and tackle well behind the advancing tide, and pack down early rather than trying to squeeze out the last few minutes of an ebb or flood.
• Keep noise low and give birds, dog walkers and other reserve users plenty of space; this is an important estuarine wildlife area as well as an angling location.
• A small amount of locally obtained intelligence from a Leigh tackle shop or experienced local angler can be especially valuable, as usable ground and productive channels change.

Two Tree Island includes sensitive nature-reserve and estuarine habitat, and access/fishing conditions may be controlled by the landowner, local authority, harbour/foreshore manager or temporary conservation notices. I cannot confirm a blanket official ban for every part of the mark, so treat fishing permission as something to verify before each visit.

• Read all signs at the entrance, on paths and at the shoreline, and comply immediately with any no-fishing, access, nesting-season, dog-control or temporary closure notice.
• Check current information with the site manager/local authority and the relevant foreshore authority before travelling, especially if intending to fish from a seawall, reserve land or a newly altered access point.
• Follow current national and local rules on minimum sizes, catch limits, protected species and bass retention; these measures can change, so use official current sources rather than old forum reports.
• Return protected or undersized fish carefully, handle rays with care, and do not remove bait by digging in protected saltmarsh or mudflat habitat unless it is explicitly permitted.
• Do not light fires, leave litter, cut vegetation or disturb birds and other wildlife.
