Filey Bay

Filey Bay is a broad, attractive North Yorkshire beach mark offering straightforward surf fishing, with the more rugged and productive ground around Filey Brigg at its northern end. It is a versatile venue rather than a guaranteed specimen-fish mark: success usually comes from matching the chosen section of bay to tide, sea state and season.

The bay runs below Filey town, with easy beach access at several points and rockier fishing available towards Filey Brigg. The central and southern beach are the simplest options for a first visit, while the Brigg requires more care, especially around tide change.

Expect a typical Yorkshire inshore mix, with flatfish and whiting providing much of the reliable sport and better fish appearing when conditions suit. The rocky northern end adds species that are less likely to be found over the clean central sand.

A simple beachcaster and two- or three-hook rig will cover much of the bay, but tackle should be strengthened and shortened when fishing the broken ground near the Brigg. Fresh, well-presented bait is generally more important than extreme casting distance.

Filey Bay can fish in very different ways depending on whether there is a coloured sea, a clean summer surf, or calm clear water. A little movement and colour often improve the beach fishing, while the rock edge can be useful around slacker water and the early flood.

The main beach is comparatively accessible, but it is still an open coastal environment with rapidly changing conditions, soft patches of sand and a tide that can cut off low rock ground. Filey Brigg should be treated as a separate, more hazardous rock mark rather than as an extension of the promenade beach.

Filey is well supplied for a fishing trip, with parking, public conveniences, food and other town-centre services close to the seafront. Facilities and parking arrangements can vary by season and location, so it is sensible to check locally before travelling.

For a first session, choose a safe, open stretch of beach rather than forcing a cast from the Brigg, then move north only if conditions and experience justify it. The bay rewards observation: watch where gullies, coloured water and wave breaks form rather than automatically casting as far as possible.

There is no clear general indication that sea angling throughout Filey Bay is prohibited, but access and activity can be affected by local beach management, events, conservation designations and temporary notices. Anglers should check current official signage and the relevant local-authority, harbour/coastal-management and fisheries guidance before fishing.
