Reighton Sands

Reighton Sands is a broad, open North Yorkshire beach between Filey and the Speeton/Bridlington side of the coast, offering straightforward surf fishing when conditions are right. It is principally a sand-and-gully venue, with the best sport often coming from mobile fish feeding in the coloured water after a moderate sea.

The mark lies on the coast below Reighton and close to the holiday-park and Reighton Gap area, with Filey to the north and the high cliffs towards Speeton to the south. Access is the main practical consideration: use recognised public beach access points and do not assume that routes through holiday parks, private land or cliff-top property are public.

Reighton is capable of producing a useful mixed beach catch rather than being a specialist rock mark. Autumn and winter are the traditional periods for larger fish, while warmer months can provide lighter-tackle sport.

A conventional two-rod beach setup covers most situations at Reighton, but the sea state and the position of the channels should dictate the approach rather than sheer casting distance. Fish baits hard on or just beyond the lip of a gully where possible, and move if there is no sign of life after a sensible spell.

There is no single magic tide at Reighton because the beach profile, surf and gutters alter, but the flooding tide through high water is a dependable starting point. A modest onshore swell that colours the water can transform the fishing, whereas prolonged rough weather can make the beach unsafe and difficult to fish.

This is an exposed beach beneath a cliffed coastline, so treat tide, surf and the route back up as seriously as the fishing. It is not an easy fully accessible venue: access commonly involves uneven approaches, steps or slopes and a walk across soft sand.

Facilities directly on the beach are limited, and anglers should arrive prepared rather than relying on services at the mark. Nearby villages, Filey and holiday-park areas may have shops or toilets, but availability and public access can be seasonal or restricted.

The most productive water is often not the furthest water: look for darker, smoother runs, surf lines and depressions left by the retreating tide. Reighton rewards anglers who travel light enough to search the beach and who choose sessions around a fishable sea rather than simply a convenient time.

There is no clear general indication that sea angling is prohibited along the publicly accessible shore at Reighton Sands, but access routes and adjacent land can be private. Check current signs at the access point, comply with local byelaws and seasonal notices, and confirm current national rules before retaining fish.
