Speeton Sands

Speeton Sands is a wild, open North Yorkshire shore beneath the high cliffs between Filey and Flamborough Head. It is valued as a mobile, natural fishing mark rather than an easy promenade beach: conditions, access and the position of channels can change markedly after rough weather.

• Expect a mixture of sand, shingle, broken ground and gullies rather than a uniform casting platform.
• It can produce well in the colder codling season and offers worthwhile summer fishing when water clarity and sea state are right.
• This is a mark for anglers who are comfortable carrying tackle over rough ground and making conservative decisions about tide, weather and cliff safety.

The sands lie below the Speeton cliffs, with access generally involving a substantial walk and a steep descent from the cliff-top area. Use only open, signed public routes and assess the route on arrival; erosion can alter or remove informal paths.

• Parking is limited around the rural cliff-top approaches, so avoid blocking lanes, field entrances, passing places or private access.
• Travel light: a rod, compact tackle pack, bait, food, water, headtorch and a small first-aid kit are more sensible than a heavy barrow load.
• The return climb is demanding, especially after dark or with a catch, and may be unsuitable for anyone with limited mobility.
• Do not rely on an old online report for access details; recent cliff movement, landowner measures or signage may affect the route.

Speeton Sands can hold the usual North Yorkshire open-shore species, with catches strongly shaped by season, colour in the water and the amount of surf. Fish the ground in front of you rather than expecting every visit to produce the same mix.

• Autumn and winter: codling, whiting, dabs and occasional dogfish are the principal targets, with better codling prospects after a suitable sea has coloured the water.
• Spring and summer: bass, flounder, dabs, plaice where clean sand and suitable water are present, dogfish and occasional rays may feature.
• Mackerel can appear in settled, clearer summer conditions, although the shore is not a dependable mackerel venue in every state of tide or sea.
• Small fish and undersized catches should be handled carefully and returned promptly; retain only fish that are legal, suitable for the table and genuinely wanted.

A straightforward beach-fishing approach works best, but rigs need enough robustness to cope with shingle, scattered rough patches and a moving sea. Locate smoother channels, seams of coloured water and the edges of any surf rather than simply casting as far as possible.

• For codling and whiting, use a clipped or streamlined two-hook rig, or a pulley-style rig where snag risk warrants it, with 3/0–5/0 hooks selected to match bait and target fish.
• Fresh or well-kept lugworm, ragworm, peeler crab, mussel and crab-based cocktails are useful baits; bulkier crab or worm baits are often favoured when targeting codling in coloured water.
• For dabs, flounder and plaice, scale down to smaller hooks and neat worm baits. A lighter, less cumbersome rig can be more effective on cleaner sand.
• For bass, fish fresh peeler crab, ragworm or sandeel-style baits around a flooding tide, especially where the surf is working over shallow water.
• Use a grip lead heavy enough to hold bottom. Re-check frequently after a sea has moved shingle or weed, as the lead weight needed can change rapidly.

The mark is usually most practical and productive around the flood and high water, because low tide can leave a long expanse of exposed sand and put the fishable water well away. Tide timing alone is not enough: swell, wind direction, water colour and the safe exit time are decisive.

• Plan to be off the beach well before the tide reaches any access pinch point; do not wait until the route is being covered.
• A moderate, fishable sea that colours the water can improve codling and whiting prospects, while a clear, settled summer sea is generally kinder for bass and flatfish tactics.
• Strong onshore winds and heavy swell can make casting, holding bottom and walking below the cliffs unsafe. A productive forecast is not worth taking risks in a big sea.
• Check local tide tables and a reliable marine forecast immediately before travelling, and allow for the effect of weather rather than treating published tide height as the whole picture.
• Night fishing can be productive, but it greatly increases the hazards of an unfamiliar descent, hidden gullies, rising water and a difficult exit.

This is a serious natural-cliff environment, not a sheltered or step-free fishing venue. The principal risks are unstable cliffs, falling debris, a rising tide, rough seas and the strenuous walk back to the top.

• Keep well away from the cliff base and do not shelter beneath overhangs; cliff falls can occur without warning, particularly after rain, frost or storms.
• Never climb unofficial gullies, use damaged steps or descend a route that looks eroded, muddy or unsupported. Turn back if the safe route is not clear.
• Fish with a companion where possible, tell somebody your plan and expected return, and carry a fully charged phone in a waterproof pouch.
• Wear sturdy footwear with grip, warm waterproof layers and a headtorch after dusk. A buoyancy aid is sensible where anglers are working close to surf or deep channels.
• The steep, uneven access and lack of nearby shelter make Speeton Sands unsuitable for wheelchair users, most pushchairs and anglers who cannot manage a demanding coastal walk.

Facilities at the sands themselves should be treated as nonexistent. Arrive self-sufficient and leave the shoreline exactly as you found it.

• There are no dependable toilets, tackle shops, drinking-water points, cafés, lighting or sheltered fishing platforms on the beach.
• Bring all bait, fresh water, food, spare clothing and a means of taking litter, discarded line and bait packaging home.
• Do not light fires or leave bait scraps, hooks or line on the shore; these create risks for wildlife, dogs and other beach users.
• Obtain bait and supplies before travelling, as nearby rural access points should not be assumed to provide services.

Speeton rewards observation and patience more than brute-force casting. Arrive in daylight on a first visit, watch the sea for a while, and identify both the fishable water and your escape route before setting up.

• Fish the cleaner-looking gutters and the boundary between smooth water and broken surf; these features can concentrate food and travelling fish.
• If weed is continually fouling the rig or the sea is too heavy to hold safely, move, shorten the session or leave rather than persisting.
• Keep rods and tackle above the likely flood line, not merely above the water level when you arrive.
• A simple catch log noting tide stage, wind, water colour, bait and exact beach feature will quickly be more useful here than generic ‘best mark’ claims.
• Be considerate of walkers, birdwatchers and local residents, especially around narrow approaches and any cliff-top parking.

Sea angling is not clearly prohibited at Speeton Sands, but access is conditional on using lawful routes and following any current landowner, coastal-safety or conservation notices. Rules can change, so signage on the day takes priority over general fishing reports.

• Do not cross private land, closed paths, fenced agricultural ground or signed cliff-hazard areas to reach the shore.
• Check current local and national rules on minimum sizes, catch limits, protected species and any seasonal measures before retaining fish; do not rely on outdated club reports or social-media posts.
• Speeton's cliffs and shore are environmentally sensitive, so avoid disturbing nesting birds, wildlife, geological exposures or protected habitats.
• If an official notice, ranger instruction or emergency closure restricts access or fishing activity, comply and choose another mark.
• Follow the Angling Trust's voluntary sea-angling good practice and dispose of all line, hooks and litter responsibly.
