Filey Beach

Filey Beach is a long, gently shelving sandy mark in Filey Bay, backed by the promenade and town, with Filey Brigg forming the rocky northern end. It is chiefly a beach-fishing venue, offering straightforward access and scope for mixed sand-ground species rather than consistently rough, deep-water fishing.

• The most productive periods are commonly around dusk, after dark and through the cooler months, when the beach is quieter and larger fish are more likely to move close.
• It can fish very differently from one tide to the next: clear, calm summer water favours lighter fishing, while coloured water and a bit of sea can improve winter prospects.
• The northern end towards the Brigg changes from open sand to mixed rougher ground, so tackle losses and snagging increase there.

The main beach runs immediately below Filey’s seafront, with numerous pedestrian access points from the promenade and town. Choose a position with enough room to cast safely and avoid busy bathing areas, especially in summer.

• The central and southern stretches are generally the easiest places for a conventional beach set-up, with broad sand and relatively uncomplicated casting.
• The northern end towards Filey Brigg can be attractive when fish are holding near rougher ground, but it is less forgiving underfoot and more affected by tide and swell.
• Parking is available in and around Filey, but availability, charges and walking distance vary considerably in holiday periods.
• Do not carry bulky gear across soft sand farther than necessary; using the promenade access and a trolley makes the session much easier.

Filey Beach can produce a useful Yorkshire east-coast mixture, although catches depend heavily on season, sea state, bait and the amount of fish present in the bay. Expect predominantly flatfish and smaller beach species in settled conditions, with better chances of cod-family fish when the water is coloured in colder weather.

• Flounder, dab and occasional plaice are realistic targets over the cleaner sand, particularly on worm baits.
• Whiting are a common autumn and winter possibility, often providing the most reliable night-time sport.
• Cod and codling may show after autumn or winter seas, especially where there is colour in the water and around the rougher northern end; they are never guaranteed from the open sand.
• Bass can occur in warmer months, particularly in low light or after a little movement in the sea; check current national rules before retaining any.
• Mackerel and garfish may be available in summer from deeper water or near the Brigg, although a long cast from the beach is not always enough in very clear, shallow conditions.
• Small rays, dogfish, pouting and other occasional visitors are possible, but should be treated as bonus catches rather than dependable targets.

A simple two-rod beach approach covers most situations: one baited rig for distance or the tide line, and one closer in where flatfish and feeding fish may be working. Match terminal tackle to the ground, as the open sand and the Brigg-side mixed ground demand different approaches.

• On clean sand, use clipped two-hook flapper rigs, loop rigs or a pulley-style rig with appropriately light snoods for flounder, dab and whiting.
• A single-hook pulley rig, rotten-bottom arrangement where necessary, and a larger bait are sensible for codling or for fishing nearer rough ground.
• Lugworm, ragworm, squid, mackerel strip, mussel and crab baits all have a place; fresh worm often scores for flatfish, while worm-and-squid or crab-based cocktails are useful in coloured water.
• Start by putting one bait relatively close—often within the first or second gutter—rather than assuming maximum distance is essential.
• Use a tripod or sturdy rest above the wash, keep lines clear of walkers, and retrieve promptly if bathers, paddleboarders or boats move into the casting area.
• Spinning with small metal lures or feathers can be worthwhile for summer pelagics only when there is clear water, casting room and no swimmers nearby.

The beach is broad and shallow, so the advancing and retreating tide has a major effect on where fish can be reached. Fishing around the flood, high water and the first part of the ebb is usually the practical starting point, but the best window changes with weather and season.

• A moderate flood can bring fish over the shallow sand, while high water often gives the best access to deeper channels from the beach.
• Very low water exposes a large expanse of sand and can leave fish beyond comfortable casting range; use it to inspect gullies, firmer routes and any snags for a later session.
• A light to moderate onshore or north-easterly sea that puts colour into the water can improve codling and whiting prospects, but conditions can become unsafe quickly.
• Calm, clear weather is generally better for flatfish, summer species and lighter tackle, though daytime beach activity may suppress sport.
• Watch the tide throughout rather than settling too close to the waterline: onshore swell can push the wash higher than expected.

Filey Beach is one of the more accessible coastal marks in the area, but it remains an open North Sea beach with fast-changing weather, a large tidal range and substantial summer footfall. The central promenade-side sections are the best choice for anglers wanting the least difficult approach.

• Check the forecast, tide times and sea state before setting out; avoid exposed positions in strong onshore winds, heavy surf, fog or electrical storms.
• Keep well clear of the base of cliffs and unstable cliff material, particularly around the northern end and after wet weather.
• Wear suitable footwear for wet sand and uneven groynes, use a headtorch after dark, and keep an exit route in mind as the tide floods.
• Never cast over or close to swimmers, children, walkers, dogs, water users or other anglers. In peak season, dawn, dusk and quieter sections away from the main bathing concentration are the responsible options.
• Promenade access can suit anglers with limited mobility, but crossing soft sand with a wheelchair, trolley or heavy kit may still be difficult; check current access arrangements locally.
• Filey Brigg and nearby rocks are not a casual extension of the beach mark: slippery weed, surge and tide isolation require proper rock-fishing experience and appropriate safety equipment.

Being directly beside Filey, the beach benefits from far more nearby services than a remote cliff or rock mark. Facilities can be seasonal, altered by works or subject to opening hours, so do not rely on any individual service being open late.

• Shops, cafés, takeaways and public conveniences are available in the town and along parts of the seafront, subject to seasonal arrangements.
• There are public car parks in Filey, though holiday traffic can make parking difficult and charges may apply.
• The promenade provides a convenient level route for moving between many access points, but fishing immediately beside the busiest sections is often impractical.
• Take all litter, discarded line, bait packaging and fish waste home; bins on a busy resort frontage are not a substitute for responsible angling waste disposal.

Filey rewards anglers who fish the water in front of them rather than treating the entire beach as one uniform mark. A short reconnaissance at low tide and a willingness to move to a quieter, better-coloured stretch can make a significant difference.

• Look for darker, smoother gullies, slight depressions, water holding between sandbars and changes in wave pattern; these are more useful clues than simply casting as far as possible.
• Fish two contrasting distances before committing to a long-range approach, as flounder and whiting can feed surprisingly close in.
• For a winter session, concentrate on a rising evening tide after the sea has taken on some colour, using fresh, well-presented bait rather than oversized, untidy cocktails.
• For summer fishing, arrive early or fish late to avoid the busiest period and to improve the chance of bass, mackerel or flatfish activity.
• Near the Brigg, lighten neither your safety margin nor your expectations of tackle loss: use tougher rigs, carry spare terminal tackle and do not fish onto unfamiliar rocks in a rising sea.
• Be courteous to holidaymakers and other beach users; a calm explanation and sensible positioning are essential at a popular resort beach.

Fishing is not treated here as universally prohibited, but local seasonal controls, bathing-zone arrangements, harbour or promenade rules, and conservation restrictions can change. Check current official notices on site and with the relevant local authority or harbour/coastal management body before fishing, particularly during the main bathing season.

• Observe any signed exclusion areas, temporary restrictions, event controls and instructions from beach staff; do not assume that a previously fishable section is available on every date.
• Filey Bay and the Brigg area have important coastal and marine wildlife interests. Take particular care around designated areas, avoid disturbing birds and seals, and check current official guidance before collecting bait, removing shellfish or fishing close to sensitive habitat.
• Follow current national sea-angling rules for species with size, catch, retention or seasonal controls, especially bass; these measures can change, so verify them from official fisheries sources.
• Do not obstruct promenades, access ramps, launching routes or emergency access, and comply with any local rules covering parking, camping, fires, barbecues and litter.
• If signage is unclear, choose another position or ask locally rather than fishing through a possible restriction.
