Filey Brigg

Filey Brigg is a classic Yorkshire rock mark: a long, low reef running out from Filey’s north side, with kelp beds, gullies, rough ground and deeper water towards its seaward end. It can produce very good sport, particularly for anglers prepared to match their approach to the tide and to treat the rock platform with considerable respect.

The Brigg lies immediately north of Filey and is reached from the town and the Country Park area, with paths leading down towards the shore and reef. It is an intertidal mark rather than a simple promenade venue, so the practical fishing area changes dramatically with the sea state and tide.

The mixed rock-and-sand habitat gives Filey Brigg a broad seasonal species list, although catches are strongly influenced by water temperature, weather and the amount of movement in the sea. Autumn and winter are traditionally the headline period for bigger fish, while warmer months offer varied light-tackle fishing.

Tackle should be chosen for rough ground rather than maximum casting distance alone; lost tackle is part of fishing the Brigg, but sensible rig choice can reduce it. A mobile approach, trying different gullies and edges as the tide changes, is often more effective than sitting over one feature for an entire session.

Tide awareness is central to fishing Filey Brigg because much of the reef covers and uncovers, and routes that look straightforward on the way out can become hazardous or impossible on the return. A manageable sea with enough colour for the target species is usually more useful than simply chasing the biggest tide or roughest forecast.

This is a potentially hazardous natural rock mark, not an accessible all-weather fishing platform. The combination of slippery weed, uneven limestone, surge, rising water and limited escape routes means that conditions can deteriorate beyond a safe margin very quickly.

Filey has the practical advantages of a resort town, with parking and shops available nearby, while the Country Park area is a useful starting point for access. Facilities are not necessarily available at the exact fishing position, so anglers should arrive self-sufficient and confirm current parking and toilet arrangements before travelling.

The Brigg rewards observation: spend time looking at the rock structure on a low tide, noting safe routes, likely gullies and the edges where sand meets kelp and broken ground. It is a mark where local knowledge is valuable, but a cautious first visit in calm daylight is far better than attempting to learn it during a night flood tide.

Filey Brigg is associated with a sensitive coastal environment, and anglers should assume that conservation, access and local-management restrictions may apply in particular areas or at particular times. Sea anglers should check current official notices before fishing, especially where they concern protected habitats, parking, access paths, bait collection, minimum fish sizes and local byelaws.
