Filey Coble Landing

Filey Coble Landing is the traditional working beach and launching area beneath Filey Brigg, on the northern side of Filey Bay. It is a useful mixed-ground shore mark rather than a remote rock-fishing venue, with the best prospects generally coming when the sea has some colour or when fish are moving along the bay.

The landing is reached from Filey seafront and sits at the foot of the slope below the Brigg, close to the coble-launching area. It is straightforward to reach on foot, but anglers should treat it as a shared working beach rather than simply an empty casting platform.

The mark can produce a varied North Yorkshire catch, although it is rarely as consistent as the more rough-ground rock marks when conditions are very calm. Seasonal movement, water colour and the amount of bait in the bay make a substantial difference.

A simple beach setup is normally more practical here than heavy rock-fishing tackle, although the ground becomes rougher and more snag-prone towards the Brigg. Fish according to the sea state: bait fishing in coloured water, and lighter tactics when summer fish are showing close in.

There is no single magic state of tide at the Coble Landing, but a flooding tide into high water is a sensible starting point, especially if it coincides with low light. The mark is usually more productive after the sea has acquired a little colour, while very clear, flat conditions can be slow for bait fishing.

The beach itself is relatively accessible compared with many Yorkshire cliff and reef marks, but the landing can become hazardous quickly in surf, at night, or when cobles are being launched and recovered. Keep clear of the operational launch route and do not attempt to fish exposed sections of the Brigg in unsuitable sea conditions.

Filey has the advantages of a proper resort town: parking, shops, food outlets and public facilities are available within walking distance, although availability and charges vary with season. The immediate landing area should be kept clear and tidy because it is used by local maritime activity and the public.

The best approach is to arrive early, watch the sea for a few minutes, and choose a position that is well away from the active launching line and other beach users. Local knowledge matters here because the fishable sand channels and the amount of weed can change after strong weather.

There is no clear basis to describe all shore fishing at Filey Coble Landing as prohibited, but access and use of the immediate landing are subject to local operational needs, signage and any temporary restrictions. Anglers remain responsible for complying with current national and local fisheries rules, including any applicable minimum-size, catch, seasonal or species-specific restrictions.
