Staithes North Wall

Staithes North Wall is a compact, traditional harbour-wall mark on the north side of Staithes Harbour, offering sheltered-water fishing in modest conditions and access to deeper, rougher water around the harbour entrance. It is a useful mixed-species venue rather than a place to expect effortless long-range casting or comfort in a big sea.

• The mark can produce mackerel, pollack, coalfish, wrasse and occasional codling, with flatties and smaller harbour species possible in the quieter water.
• Its principal attraction is the ability to fish changing water: harbour margins and the mouth on calmer days, or the seaward side only when conditions are genuinely safe.
• It is best approached as a mobile, observant session; fish close in, along structural edges and around tide lines before assuming distance is needed.
• The wall is highly exposed to northerly and easterly weather, and can become an unsafe place very quickly when swell reaches the coast.

The North Wall is the northern arm of Staithes Harbour, reached on foot through the village and harbour area. It is a working coastal setting, so access must never obstruct boats, launching activity, residents or harbour operations.

• Parking is normally in or above the village rather than beside the wall; expect a downhill walk to the harbour and a steep return with tackle.
• Access along harbour walls can change because of repairs, storm damage, gates or operational requirements. Treat barriers, notices and instructions from harbour staff as final.
• Fishing is generally most practical from safe, level sections of wall, keeping well clear of the end and of any area used for mooring or launching.
• Do not assume that a visible ledge, lower wall or slipway remains reachable once the tide rises; retreat routes can disappear surprisingly fast.
• Keep tackle compact. Staithes is narrow, busy in season and not suited to sprawling rod stands, large luggage carts or blocking pedestrian routes.

Staithes has the rocky-ground and tidal-water mix typical of the North Yorkshire coast, although the exact catch is strongly governed by sea state, season and water clarity. Small fish are common around harbour structure, while better fish are most likely when food and moving water bring them within reach.

• Mackerel: often the main summer target when clear water and bait fish are present; shoals can appear suddenly and vanish just as quickly.
• Pollack and coalfish: likely around wall shadow, kelp-fringed ground, harbour-mouth flow and submerged structure; smaller specimens are frequent, with occasional better fish possible.
• Wrasse: a warm-water, rough-ground prospect in calmer periods, particularly where bait can be presented tight to rock and weed without snagging immediately.
• Cod and codling: a late-autumn and winter possibility in coloured water, especially after a manageable sea has stirred food from the ground. Expectations should be realistic from the wall itself.
• Flatfish and harbour species: dab, flounder, plaice in suitable seasons, plus rockling, small whiting, pouting and other mini-species can show in quieter water or on a small baited hook.
• Return unwanted fish carefully and promptly. The hard wall face and drop to the water make a landing net especially valuable.

Tackle should be selected for control rather than maximum casting range. The best approach is often to begin light and close in, then increase lead, bait size or casting distance only if the tide and sea demand it.

• For mackerel, use a small metal lure, spinner or a modest string of feathers; keep the rig manageable and avoid heavy multi-hook traces when other harbour users are nearby.
• For pollack and coalfish, work a small metal lure, soft plastic or jelly-style lure through mid-water, alongside current seams and close to structural edges. Vary retrieve depth before moving swims.
• For wrasse, use a short, robust rough-ground rig with crab, worm or shellfish bait, fished close to cover. Expect snags and use only as much lead as needed to hold bottom.
• For codling and winter mixed fish, a two-hook clipped or simple pulley-style bait rig with worm, crab or squid-based cocktails can be effective when the water is coloured. Keep casts sensible: fish often feed close to the wall and harbour mouth.
• For flatties and small species, a light ledger or short flowing trace with worm, ragworm or strips of fish can pick up bites in calmer, cleaner conditions.
• Use a landing net with a long enough handle for the wall height, and avoid attempting to hand-line fish up bare masonry. A fish dropped at the wall base is often unrecoverable.

Moderate, fishable water is far more valuable here than simply choosing the biggest tide. Staithes can fish well around the movement of water at the harbour mouth, but the same movement becomes hazardous when combined with swell.

• The periods around mid-tide and the flooding tide often give useful flow around the entrance, while lower water may reveal more of the surrounding ground but can restrict safe fishing positions.
• A calm to moderate sea is most suitable for lure fishing, float tactics and fishing the harbour-side water with control.
• A little colour after a settled, manageable blow can improve winter bait fishing, but avoid the wall entirely if waves are reaching it, breaking across the entrance or making footing wet.
• Northerly and easterly winds can put swell directly into this coast; even if wind strength drops, residual swell may remain dangerous for a long time.
• Clear summer water favours mackerel, pollack and wrasse approaches, while coloured autumn and winter water is generally more relevant for codling and bait fishing.
• Check a current marine forecast, tide table and actual sea state before setting out. Do not rely on a forecast alone when the coast is already carrying swell.

This is not a forgiving mark in rough weather. The combination of hard stone, slippery weed, a vertical drop and the possibility of waves overtopping the wall means that personal safety must decide whether the session happens.

• Do not fish the outer end, lower levels or exposed seaward face in swell, during spray conditions, or when the wall is wet from wave wash.
• Wear grippy footwear, warm waterproof layers and a properly fitted flotation aid when fishing close to deep water; a head torch is essential if fishing around dawn, dusk or after dark.
• Never turn your back on the sea. Watch the water for a sustained period before setting up, as larger sets can arrive well after apparently quiet waves.
• Fish with a companion where possible, tell someone your plan, and keep a phone protected and accessible. In an emergency at the coast, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.
• The walk through Staithes, uneven harbour surfaces and wall access are not well suited to wheelchair use or anglers with limited mobility. There may also be no practical way to land a fish without negotiating a wall edge.
• Keep children well back from edges and do not allow loose tackle, hooks or bags to create trip hazards on the walkway.

Staithes village has visitor amenities, food outlets and public conveniences at times, but anglers should not assume every service will be open outside the main visitor season or early in the morning. The harbour itself should be treated as a fishing location, not a tackle-preparation area.

• Bring drinking water, food, spare clothing, a first-aid kit and a means of carrying litter home.
• Local shops may have limited bait or fishing supplies, but it is sensible to obtain specialist bait, terminal tackle and replacement leads before arrival.
• Parking availability can be limited, particularly during holidays and fine weekends; allow time for the walk rather than trying to unload or park in restricted harbour lanes.
• Use public bins only for ordinary waste where provided. Take all line, hooks, bait packaging and discarded rigs home, as these are a serious hazard to wildlife and harbour users.
• Respect nearby homes, businesses and boats by keeping noise low, particularly on early or late sessions.

Staithes rewards anglers who pay attention to what the water is doing rather than those who simply cast as far as possible. A quiet hour spent watching tide lines, bait activity and the movement of boats can reveal the most productive and safest areas.

• Start with a few short casts along the edge and through the harbour-mouth flow; many fish patrol close to the structure.
• Travel light enough to move if the tide changes, but carry enough tackle to switch between a lure, light bait rig and rough-ground setup.
• If boats are moving, retrieve and make space. Never cast across an active route, between moored vessels or where a line could foul harbour equipment.
• A small bucket of fresh seawater, a dehooker and a landing net make catch-and-release of small fish much easier from a high wall.
• Avoid leaving unattended rods. A sudden mackerel take, snag or pull from a larger fish can send a rod into the harbour.
• Ask locally about current access and recent catches, but make your own safety judgement when you arrive; conditions on this stretch of coast can differ sharply from one day to the next.

No blanket fishing ban is assumed for this mark, but local harbour controls, temporary closures and safety notices can override normal access at any time. Sea-angling rules also change, so anglers must verify current national and regional requirements before retaining fish.

• Obey all harbour signage, gates, staff instructions and any temporary works restrictions. If a section is signed as closed, operational or no-fishing, do not use it.
• Do not interfere with moorings, nets, pots, launching activity, navigation or access required by harbour users.
• Check current rules for retained species, including minimum conservation reference sizes, bag restrictions and any seasonal measures. Official fisheries and regional inshore fisheries sources are the appropriate places to confirm them.
• The Staithes coast lies within a sensitive marine environment, including the wider Staithes and Port Mulgrave Marine Conservation Zone area. Shore angling is not automatically prohibited by that designation, but avoid damaging habitats, disturbing wildlife or leaving tackle behind.
• A rod licence is not generally required for ordinary sea angling in England, but this does not remove the need to follow fisheries byelaws, access rules and any species-specific restrictions.
• If you are uncertain whether the wall is open to anglers on the day, choose another clearly accessible public shore mark rather than treating uncertainty as permission.
