Staithes Harbour

Staithes Harbour is a compact, characterful North Yorkshire mark where sheltered harbour-water fishing meets rougher, more exposed rock and wall fishing close to the village. It can be productive for mixed species, but its narrow working-harbour setting means considerate, tide-aware fishing is essential.

• Best thought of as a short-range mixed-ground venue rather than a big-distance casting beach.
• The harbour walls and adjacent rocky edges offer different depth, shelter and snag levels within a small area.
• It is particularly useful when a full North Sea swell makes more open cliff-top or rock marks impractical, although the harbour itself can still be dangerous in rough weather.
• Expect a scenic but busy setting, especially in summer and on weekends; this is not a mark for spreading tackle across walkways.

The mark is in the old fishing village of Staithes, on the North Yorkshire coast, with access on foot through steep, narrow village streets to the harbour and seafront. Parking is normally outside the tightest part of the village, so travel light and allow time for the walk down and back up.

• Harbour-wall and waterside access can involve uneven stone, steps, slopes and narrow pedestrian routes.

• Coalfish, pollack and occasionally other rock-loving species can show around deeper wall edges, kelp and rocky ground.
• Whiting, pouting and dabs or other flatfish may be available over cleaner patches, particularly in the darker and colder part of the year.
• Mackerel can appear in the warmer months when clear water and bait fish are present; they are far from guaranteed within the harbour.
• Wrasse are a realistic summer prospect over rough, weedy ground, while bass may occur in suitable conditions around the harbour mouth and nearby shoreline.
• Small fish, crabs and nuisance bites are common, so use robust bait presentation and sensible hook sizes for the species sought.

Keep methods simple and adapt them to the ground directly in front of you: Staithes rewards controlled fishing more than blindly casting as far as possible. A short cast into a fishable channel or along a wall can be more effective than putting a rig into heavy kelp or boat traffic.

• For codling, whiting and mixed winter fish, a sturdy beachcaster or all-round shore rod with a simple clipped rig, pulley-style rig or two-hook flapper is practical where casting room permits.
• Use plain or grip leads only where safe and appropriate; in strong tide or surge, maintaining contact can be difficult and lost tackle is likely.

The harbour’s shelter can make it fishable in conditions that are uncomfortable elsewhere, but it is not immune to North Sea swell, wave surge or wind funnelled through the entrance. A moderate, coloured sea is often favourable for codling, while calmer, clearer conditions generally suit summer lure fishing and wrasse tactics.

• Fish movement, depth and safe standing room change markedly through the tide, especially around the harbour mouth and lower wall sections.
• Rising water can bring fish closer and cover awkward ground, but it can also remove escape routes and make platforms slippery.
• Avoid exposed outer walls and entrance areas in a strong onshore blow, during large swell, or whenever waves are washing the structure.
• Winter or post-blow coloured water can favour bait fishing for codling and other species, provided the sea has settled enough to fish safely.
• Clear, settled summer water is better for visual lure work, mackerel and wrasse, though bright, busy daytime conditions can make fish cautious.

Staithes is picturesque but not an easy-access, low-risk promenade mark. Slippery algae, uneven stonework, tidal cut-off, confined casting space and sudden swell are the principal hazards.

• Wear grippy footwear and warm, waterproof clothing; rock and harbour surfaces can remain slick even after rain has stopped.
• A buoyancy aid is a sensible precaution near the water, especially when fishing alone or anywhere exposed to surge.
• Never turn your back on the sea, stand at the harbour entrance in rough conditions, or fish below a route that can be cut off by the tide.
• Take a headtorch for darkness, but do not rely on it to make unsafe weather or footing acceptable.
• Use a landing net or drop net where appropriate rather than attempting unsafe lifts from a wall; ensure it does not obstruct boats or other users.
• Access is not well suited to many mobility needs because of the steep village approach, steps, uneven surfaces and potentially long carry from parking.
• Tell someone where you are going and leave immediately if water begins reaching your position or conditions deteriorate.

Staithes village has visitor amenities, but anglers should treat them as village facilities rather than services provided for fishing. Plan food, water, lighting, tackle spares and a means of taking litter home before setting out.

• Parking is generally limited and may involve a steep walk to the harbour; check current local parking information and restrictions before travel.
• Shops, cafés and public conveniences may be available in or near the village, but opening arrangements can vary by season and time of day.
• There is no reason to expect dedicated angler platforms, bait supplies, cleaning stations or secure tackle storage at the harbour.
• Mobile signal and weather exposure can vary among the enclosed streets and seafront, so download essential tide and travel information in advance.
• Keep bait, hooks and rubbish contained: the harbour is used by residents, visitors, dogs, wildlife and working boats.

A quiet, tidy approach goes a long way at Staithes because the fishing sits within a small, lived-in harbour village. Spend a little time watching water depth, boat movements and the line of kelp or clean ground before committing to a spot.

• Arrive with only the kit you can carry comfortably; a compact rod bag and backpack are far easier to manage than a loaded trolley.
• If targeting codling, concentrate on a fishable patch of rough or mixed ground after the water has taken on colour, rather than assuming maximum range is required.
• For summer sessions, carry both bait and a small lure kit so you can respond to clear-water activity without needing to move far.
• Fish cleanly and retrieve any loose line, bait packaging and discarded rigs; litter and tangled line are especially harmful around a harbour.
• Be courteous to local anglers and harbour users, ask before setting up near working activity, and move rather than creating conflict.
• If the harbour feels too busy or the sea is unsafe, regard that as a reason to abandon the session rather than forcing a cast.

Fishing is not treated here as clearly prohibited across the whole mark, but harbour rules, land ownership and temporary operational restrictions can apply to particular walls, slipways and waterside areas. The authority of current signage and harbour staff always takes priority over general fishing advice.
