Cowbar

6.6· Rocks · North Yorkshire

Cowbar is a rugged rock-and-gully mark north of Staithes, approached on foot from the Cowbar side via cliff-top paths and tide-dependent descents to the scars. It is primarily a rough-ground venue, with kelp, broken rock and deeper gullies producing cod and mixed rock fish; casting is often less important than presenting bait safely clear of snags.

Cowbar is a serious rough-ground rock mark where safe positioning and controlled bait presentation matter more than distance. Its kelp gullies, broken water and deeper rock edges can produce codling in colder, slightly coloured conditions, while clearer settled spells open up lure and close-range opportunities for pollack, mackerel and wrasse. Treat sea state, the retreat route and the individual gully as the key decisions before committing to a session.

  • Fish the productive gully edges without chasing unnecessary distance.
  • Time codling sessions for easing coloured water, not peak swell.
  • Know when Cowbar’s ledges are a no-go and when to switch to Staithes.
  • Turn clear-water spells into close-range pollack, wrasse and mackerel opportunities.
