Cowbar

Cowbar is the rugged headland and rocky shoreline immediately north-east of Staithes on the North Yorkshire coast. It is a productive but serious rock-fishing area, valued for its kelp-strewn gullies, rough ground and the chance of codling in the colder months.

• This is not a simple beach mark: footing, swell and the route back off the rocks need as much consideration as the fishing.
• It suits competent shore anglers who can travel light, read the sea and accept that some sessions are unfishable.
• The ground is generally rough, so tackle losses are part of fishing Cowbar rather than a sign that something has gone wrong.
• In settled conditions it can offer enjoyable mixed fishing; in a proper autumn or winter sea it becomes primarily a codling prospect, where safe access is the limiting factor.

Cowbar sits above and north of Staithes, with fishing taken from the rocky foreshore, scars and gullies below the headland rather than from the village harbour itself. The usual approach is from the Staithes/Cowbar side using established public routes towards the coast, followed by a careful descent or walk along the shore where conditions permit.

• Start by identifying a legitimate public route and assess the descent in daylight; paths and informal tracks can be steep, muddy, eroded or slippery after rain.
• Parking in and around Staithes is limited and can be busy, particularly in summer; use signed public parking and do not obstruct narrow lanes, gateways or local access.
• The final route to a chosen ledge may be cut off by the tide or made impassable by swell, so do not assume an outward route will remain usable later.
• Cowbar is best treated as a daylight-reconnaissance mark before attempting a first evening or winter session.
• Keep clear of private gardens, farmed land and signed restricted areas. Public coastal access does not automatically create a safe or lawful route across every piece of land to the foreshore.

The main draw is codling over the rough ground when colder water, coloured seas and the right tide bring fish close in. Outside the cod season, Cowbar can provide the usual North Yorkshire rock-shore mix, although catches vary greatly with sea state and season.

• Codling and occasional larger cod are the principal autumn and winter target, especially after a manageable sea has stirred the ground.
• Pollack are possible around kelp beds, deeper edges and clear-water gullies, particularly in the warmer part of the year.
• Wrasse can be present over clean kelp-and-rock patches during settled summer conditions.
• Mackerel may show over deeper water in summer, while coalfish, pouting, poor cod, rockling and small flatfish can feature depending on the exact gully and bait.
• Bass are possible in suitable warmer, mobile-water conditions, but should be regarded as a bonus rather than the mark's dependable quarry.
• Species presence is seasonal and local: a mark that produces cod after an autumn blow may be poor for lure fishing once the water has cleared.

Fishing at Cowbar is largely about presenting a robust bait close to rough structure while retaining enough tackle to land a fish safely. Match tackle to the sea rather than chasing distance for its own sake.

• For codling, use a capable beach or rock rod, a reliable reel and abrasion-resistant line or leader suitable for rough ground and the lead required by the tide.
• Simple clipped-down or pulley-style rigs with strong hooks are commonly practical for bait fishing, as they protect bait during the cast and help lift fish away from snags on the retrieve.
• Fresh or well-salted crab, lugworm, ragworm, mussel, squid and cocktail baits can all be useful; local catch reports and bait availability often indicate what is working.
• Fish the edges of kelp, gullies and darker broken water rather than automatically casting as far as possible. Many fish patrol surprisingly close to the rocks.
• A rotten-bottom arrangement can save terminal tackle on some snaggier patches, but it must still be strong enough to fish responsibly and retrieve any hooked fish.
• In calmer, clearer water, medium-weight spinning or lure tackle can be effective for pollack and mackerel. Work metals, soft plastics or diving plugs along deeper kelp margins, but avoid casting where a hooked fish cannot be landed.
• Carry a landing net or drop net only where it can genuinely be used safely; never lean over exposed ledges or attempt to hand-line fish up a dangerous face.

Cowbar fishes according to sea state more than a single universally best tide. A modestly coloured sea can switch the rough ground on for codling, whereas large swell can make every rock ledge unsafe regardless of the forecast tide.

• For codling, the period after a north-easterly or easterly blow has eased is often worth watching, provided the swell has dropped enough to allow safe fishing.
• Moving water around the middle stages of the tide can be productive, but the best window differs between individual scars and gullies; observe the water before committing to a position.
• Low water may reveal features and improve access to some areas, but it can also leave anglers a long way from depth and create a return-route problem as the tide floods.
• Higher water can put fish closer to the rock edge, but it also allows waves to reach ledges that looked safe an hour earlier.
• Calm, clear summer evenings are generally more suitable for pollack, wrasse and mackerel tactics than for traditional rough-water cod fishing.
• Check a reliable local tide table, marine forecast, swell forecast and wind direction before travelling. Do not rely on a generic weather icon: wave height, period and direction matter on this exposed coast.

This is an exposed, uneven natural shore and is not an accessible fishing venue. The principal hazards are swell, sudden wave surges, wet weed, unstable rock, steep approaches, darkness and being cut off by the tide.

• Do not fish if waves are washing the intended platform, surging through gullies behind you, or preventing a quick retreat; conditions can worsen rapidly around headlands.
• Wear grippy boots with ankle support, suitable waterproof clothing and a buoyancy aid when fishing close to the sea. Studded footwear may help on some rock, but it does not make wave-washed weed safe.
• Fish with a companion where possible, tell someone your plan and return time, and carry a charged phone in a waterproof case.
• Keep a clear escape route behind you, watch the sea for a substantial period before setting up, and reassess it throughout the session.
• Avoid fishing alone at night until fully familiar with the route and mark. Navigation back over cliff paths and rocks is substantially harder after dark.
• Take particular care with children, dogs and inexperienced anglers; Cowbar is not a suitable introductory rock-fishing location in anything but very calm, closely supervised conditions.
• In an emergency call 999 and ask for the Coastguard. Do not enter the water or climb onto unstable rocks to attempt a rescue.

Cowbar itself is a natural, undeveloped shoreline, so anglers should expect no facilities once away from the village. Staithes is the practical base for parking, supplies and public amenities, subject to seasonal opening and local arrangements.

• Bring all bait, water, food, lighting, spare tackle and first-aid essentials with you; there are no shore-side tackle facilities at the fishing rocks.
• Public toilets, shops and food outlets are generally found in or around Staithes rather than at the mark; confirm current opening times before an early or late session.
• Mobile signal can be variable around cliffs and below the headland, so download tide and weather information before leaving built-up areas.
• Pack out every item, including discarded line, bait packaging and damaged rigs. Lost line is particularly hazardous to seabirds and other wildlife.

Cowbar rewards observation and restraint more than brute-force casting. Spend time locating a safe stance, a fishable gully and a retreat route before unpacking all of your gear.

• Travel light enough to move quickly if the sea rises; a heavily loaded barrow is unsuitable for the rocky approach.
• Arrive well before the intended fishing window on a first visit, preferably at low daylight, to identify weed beds, channels and safe exits.
• If the sea is too large at Cowbar, do not try to "make it fishable" by standing higher on a cliff edge or closer to the wash; choose a safer venue or go home.
• Use only as much lead as is needed to hold bottom. Excessively heavy leads can worsen snags and make casts over uneven terrain more hazardous.
• Retain fish selectively and only where you can identify and handle them confidently. Returning unwanted fish quickly and carefully is especially important on rock marks.
• Be considerate of walkers, residents and other anglers: keep access paths clear, avoid noise late at night and leave the approach cleaner than you found it.

There is no general indication that all sea angling at Cowbar is officially prohibited, but access and fishing can be affected by local signage, landownership, safety closures and fisheries rules. It remains the angler's responsibility to check the current position before fishing.

• Obey all posted signs, temporary cliff-path closures, landowner restrictions and instructions from relevant authorities; do not assume an old path or online report confirms current access.
• Check current national rules for species subject to recreational sea-angling controls, including any minimum sizes, catch limits, closed periods or retention restrictions. These rules can change.
• Follow any applicable North Eastern Inshore Fisheries and Conservation Authority rules, local harbour requirements and environmental restrictions relevant to the area.
• Do not remove shellfish, bait or other marine life where notices prohibit it, and be mindful of any protected habitat or wildlife disturbance restrictions.
• If targeting migratory fish or fishing in or near freshwater rather than the open sea, different permissions and regulations may apply; confirm the exact boundary with the relevant authority.
• When in doubt, consult current official government, IFCA, National Park, council and on-site information rather than relying solely on social-media reports or old fishing guides.
